We won't be any closer to winning by disposing of the few draft victories we have.

Chubba was a draft victory as a cheap starter who’s been solid. It still doesn’t change the fact that you don’t sign him to a big deal. CMC worked out for SF as he helped them get to the NFC Championship and SB before getting hurt but Mason has looked solid in his place this year. Miles Sanders has been a complete disaster.

Brooks will be fine behind this OL when he’s healthy. I wasn’t a proponent of signing him over a C or CB, but he’s here.

Am I the only one here that thinks we should see if Brooks can even play in the NFL before we ship Chuba off lol?

No you are not. It is the biggest reason for getting him out there. Not just because of Chuba but you need to see what you have.

We have not even seen Brooks play. We can't just keep shipping off talent for draft picks, especially when we can't draft well.

Agreed. I always laugh at people saying don’t trade players for picks

A lot us see it from the other point to view. We laugh when people say "trade good players for draft picks". I understand the logic. That might work if you have a shrewd GM and solid scouting department. But you have to draft players that are a sure bet to be equal to or better than the ones you traded. Based on the track record in Carolina for over almost a decade we haven't done that.

We traded CMAC, DJ Moore, and Brian Burns to "get more picks". What has that done for us? NOTHING but make us a worse football team.

We had the 1st pick in the 2023 the draft and blew it.

We've had high choices in the 2nd round and passed on good players (especially O-lineman and D-lineman) to draft the likes of TMJ and Jonathan Mingo.

We gave away a 2nd pick to get Sam Darnold than promptly benched him the next year for Baker Mayfield. We gave away a 3rd round pick for CJ Henderson.

We have traded away mid round picks to move up and draft Matt Corral and DJ Henderson.

With the exception of J. Horn, I don't think Carolina could get a 3rd round choice for anyone they have drafted on the trading block by the 2024 trading deadline.

Regarding trading good players for draft picks, the reality is we are really bad at that.  In fairness, over half the teams in the league are bad at it, but when you have our track record, might be a good idea to keep some of the players we developed that are actually decent.

I'm not concerned at all. Brooks is a more dynamic runner. He's faster and more explosive. He also comes into the league as a better blocker. All of these traits, especially in congruence with the blocking translate well to the NFL. The RB position is one of the best positions in general that translate to the pros from college.

Chuba wins 60% of the time on 1st and 2nd downs. He wins 50% of the time on short yardage downs.

A championship RB wins 70% of the time on 1st and 2nd downs. A championship RB wins 70% (bad OL) and 80% (good OL) of the time on short yardage.

Don't pay Chuba. He has reached his max development and it's not enough. He has 700 more carries in him after this season. That's 3 more seasons as an average starter or 6 more seasons as a backup. Next up if he won't accept a team friendly contract knowing he will be a backup short a miracle progression in his game.

As a side note, a good QB sneak wins short yardage 90% to 95% of the time.

At some point we need to draft well. I didn’t want to trade CMC or Moore. We should have traded Burns to the Rams. Burns is the perfect example of why sometimes you should trade players away for picks before paying them a bundle.

Here’s another draft story that might make sense. If we traded Burns and Moore (I don’t think CMC was worth the picks) during 2022 when the Rams offered 2 1sts and 1 2nd and the Packers offered a 1st for Moore, here’s what we could have had based on the picks and players available at those picks/a couple later:

2023 GB 1st - Will McDonald and his 11 sacks this year was taken at pick 15 which GB offered.

2023 LAR 2nd - Steve Avila starting G, could have spent Lewis’ $$$s on something else or saved it

2024 LAR 1st - Brian Thomas WR, I would have gone away from the Rams pick since we got McDonald in 2023 and we had a desperate need at WR

2025 LAR 1st - Tankathon has a DT/CB/WR at picks 10-12, so plenty of options to go BPA

So, while we have done poo, we still would have been better off trading Burns and Moore and select the guys who went right where other teams (who draft better) selected them or went best WR and tried to replace Burns and Moore.

I realize that we don’t have the talent to get a lot of picks. We basically fuged ourselves based on the decision of who to trade and when plus Bryce Young. That shouldn’t scare everyone into a what if we lose Chubba for draft picks. Oh no! Chubba is fine but he’s a product of hard nosed running behind a solid OL. 5.2 YPC is nice but there are 12 RBs with 5.0+ YPC and over 300 yards rushing so far. Rushing is up this year, likely because of the efforts of all teams to stop the pass.

Anyway, we won’t win by paying Chubba a 2nd contract even if we haven’t seen Brooks yet. We will win when we finally have a competent GM that drafts well and makes good decisions. If we continue to be afraid of losing Diontae and Chubba level talents because we suck at drafting, I can guarantee that we’ll suck for another 7 years.

See my long post above. If you are scared of Brooks not being better than Chubba and you’d rather have both and pay Miles Sanders money to Chubba because we can’t draft well, you aren’t going to solve anything.

I’ll repeat myself. If we can’t draft well in the future, we will always suck. There are no set of players you can keep extending and not trading that will make this current team a playoff team in the future.

If we finally have a stud QB, we can find another Chubba in every single future draft. He’s been solid for a 3-21 team but he’s replaceable.

Fun fact, 76.3% of all statistics are made up.

I mean, every person is a unique snowflake... but yeah that is true.

He isn't special he is just ours and one of the few success stories. Shelf life though, is growing shorter.
