Since Brees has retired, they have gone:

9-8 missed the playoffs

7-10 missed the playoffs

9-8 missed the playoffs

they are currently 2-4 and will most likely miss the playoffs again, even if they manage to hover around .500

They're in purgatory, which is the worst place to be in the NFL. They're not good enough to make the playoffs but too good to get high draft picks to help get them out of the funk. Add to that the cap gymnastics they have to do every year and they can't get our of the current spot they're in.

It's fools gold false hope year in and year out.

At least we know where we stand.
