Stop the obsession with the QB position

I've watched this organization and this fanbase going crazy over the past few years, destroying everything that stands in the path of drafting the next Patrick Mahomes.  In this period of time we've traded our best players, traded our best picks, and fired our coaches all in attempt to find the next chosen qb in the NFL.  Meanwhile we're watching the two qbs we had before drafting Bryce play at a probowl level this year.  We apparently have an insatiable desire for suffering.

Before we hired Reich, I made a case that we should keep Darnold and invest our assets into drafting receivers, secondary help, and adding beef to the lines.  We had played pretty well down the stretch two years ago, developed an identity, and were poised to be competing for a playoff spot the following season.  Many on the board had thought the same thing, but many on here have a superbowl or bust mentality, and are willing to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

It needs to stop.  We need to focus on the development of our team.  We're fortunate enough to have stumbled across a qb that can actually throw some NFL passes, and it should serve as a reminder that it will be easier to be a good team if were a good team with an experienced quarterback, then being a good team with a rookie qb that has a bad team.

Right now we've found a number one receiver, we see progress out of Legette, the Oline is playing well, and Chubba is dynamic.  Lets resign the players who have shown they can play. They all looked liked ass under Bryce.  We don't need a Patrick Mahomes, we only need a qb thats good enough to allow our players to show what they can do.  If you have a good team you don't need an all world qb, it would be nice, but we don't need it.  We didn't need it in 03.

Lets fix this horrible defense, lets makes sure we have weapons, and lets roll with an experienced quarterback until we stumble across the opportunity to improve at the position without forcing it and decimating our franchise in the process.  Until then, lets make the playoffs next year.

It's not an obsession but a necessity. We need better QB play. Dalton has been a big improvement but he is a backup at this point. The entire point of each season is to try and win a SB even if they have to build themselves up to get there. SF can't get it done with a loaded team and they need a better QB. I know it's hard to hear as a Panthers fan because it keeps not happening but you can build up a team and still take a shot at QBs without crippling the first part.

It's a QB driven leuge. That doesn't mean it's justifiable to ignore the rest. But it's also not going to change anytime soon.

yeah op is a weird revisionist history . Offensive line is performing at a high level. They have the requisite amount of skill players. No superstars but certainly enough to win. It may have taken offloading some defensive talent to reinforce the offense but you can’t fix everything in one offseason and if you’re going to choose what to invest in in this league you’re always going to pick offense over defense and recent games compared to what the panthers have been since Cam hurt his shoulder are the demonstration of why.

I mean it’s also an overreaction to the defense playing poorly. They had 7 starters out Sunday. There’s not a team in the league that has the depth to just weather the storm on that. Conversely you’d like a QB that doesn’t throw the ball away late. Andy Dalton has been Andy Dalton (the kind of QB okay the OP is advocating for) and it’s cost the team two games.

It's not a necessity to take a qb at the very top of the draft. A scan of the best QBs will demonstrate this.

No qb can carry a roster

OP does have a point, sort of.  But the snowball started down the hill way before a Reich / Darnold decision.  Using the 03 season as a guidepost isn't realistic either - the league is completely different now.

The inevitable problem is that you do need a really good QB to win a SB these days.  At any one time, there are probably only 15-20 good QB's in the league.  Thus, the problem the Panthers have.  They don't have one.

This is accurate but 1st round QBs have a higher chance of being good.  Rodgers, Allen, Tua, Jackson, Burrow, Stroud, Lawrence, Mahomes, Herbert, (possibly Daniels), Goff, Love, Darnold, Baker, Murray, and Stafford were all 1st rounders.  Which is 16 of the current starters and are decent QBs.  That doesn't include Williams, Nix, Maye, Richardson and Penix who the jury is still out on.

The problem is they will always be overdrafted, so you have to find a real diamond in the rough to get one later.  Yeah a lot of these guys have switched from their original teams, but they are all talented QBs drafted in the first round.

So in other words we should have kept Wilks and Darnold?

Finally someone other than myself who recognized the real mistake. Not only would we have been set up for success we would still have DJ Moore and most likely another offensive weapon with that draft pick.

Screw you Tepper!

I honestly am still on the side of stack defense, especially pass rushers this draft and sign a stop gap qb till next year.  Being forced to pass most of the time because you're playing from behind because your defense cant stop anyone isn't good for any qb, especially a rookie, especially with how good our running game has looked when we are able to use it before having to go one dimensional every game because of the score.

They haven't always. This is the madness that is being suggested to stop. This trend isn't that old.

This is the way especially since the best QB Sanders would not play here. Just trade back and take the best defensive player on the board hopefully Hunter and go from there.

All depends on the QBs like always. No one is saying force it but there will likely be options. I am personally not high on the top QB because they don't usually look like the best option to me...just the guy the media machine is in love with.

They can't and shouldn't but it's one pick, or it should be. Plenty of talent to be had around that 1 pick every other year at worst. Also no position can carry a roster, still a team game. It's the most important and valuable position and it's simply not close.

This team needs to find a solution to the pass rush. They'll be ok if that's addressed. Getting back Derrick Brown will go a long way in slowing down the run. Too many new starters across the board to expect success early. Keep more players than you lose as continuity is important. Develop the young guys. Bring in more young talent. Keep the performing vets. Establish a culture. One player (QB) doesn't make a team. Never has. Never will. Not in football.

It's a QB driven league. It is what it is.

Yeah, if you have a GREAT overall roster you can get by with a good QB. But as soon as you have to pay that good QB you're no longer going to be able to afford that great overall roster. The only way to compete year in and year out long-term is by having an elite QB. Everyone else is just trying to catch lightning in a bottle.
