I think that will shift in the next few years. The NFL is cyclical, so I suspect offenses will start morphing back towards some smash mouth football to counter changes to defenses to stop all the pass happy, high flying offenses with a lot of smaller, faster players.

Not an original thought, I have heard it echoed numerous times by multiple prognosticators over the past couple of seasons.

Somebody's gotta win a Super Bowl with it, or it's not happening.

I don't mean to say that it won't still be led by an elite QB. Those instances are relatively rare. That has only happened 5 times in the last 20 Super Bowls. Nick Foles, Eli Manning(2x), Joe Flacco and Ghost of Peyton Manning.

One could argue against Flacco and Eli but IMO those were never truly elite QB's even at their best.

If the Ravens won the Super Bowl the league would start to shift a lot.

Realistically the base probably doesn't matter too much, since they're probably in nickel or dime most of the time.

I agree but it matters some- The nickel ran from an odd front is different. It just swaps (depending on preference) an OLB or an ILB. So it’s like the 3-3-5 Snow employed.

A nickel from the even front typically is 4-2-5. With the nickel usually Replacing the weak or strong side backer.

Our Personnel probably will not make either work as was noted. I wouldn’t mind them trying some stuff out though. What do we have to lose at this point. Let Lawson and Haynes put their hands down and play those 3 Young backers and let’s see if it helps.

Rhule ruined our defense when we went to 3-3-5. Rhule wanted small fast guys on the d-line. Then we kick Rhule out. We had no defensive line except Brown. We never tried to fix our d-line and now with our flipping defense, we have a lot of mixed part on our defense line.

if I was the GM this draft will be ends and dline …. We built the o-line (now we just need depth pieces). Next year build the D-line

The 3-4 can be very effective and has been used for elite defenses for a long time. Has little to do with the base defense and everything to do with the derth of talent to run the scheme.

Switch to a 4-3 tomorrow and we will still suck as badly as we do now.

yeah 3-4 is the best, we just arent good enough on D.

The main reason they left the 4-3, was they could not find or draft 4-3 ends. 3-4 OLB were easier to find according to numbers.

3-4 truly needs a 375 NT ballerina thats tough enough to take on 2 blockers without losing the gaps. panthers dont have a vince wilfork, its where everything starts in the middle. Even Ray lewis struggled without sam adams or ngata.

Yeah, it doesn't matter the scheme you are running if you simply cannot get the right players.
