Give Morgan Credit

Giving Dan credit for our Oline is almost as bad as peoples' praise for Hurney's perennial top 5 1st round picks.

Not everything is 100% bad or 100% good.  Most things aren't.  The moves that Morgan made at guard worked.  They were expensive, but it worked.

Also, we didn't pick in the top 5 very often with Marty Hurney, and his ability to draft good players in the 1st shouldn't be discounted.  Of course, we didn't have a great hit rate in the 2nd and beyond.  And he had no idea how to manage the salary cap.

lol yeah… IF smh

Fraizer already looks great and fills a position of massive need for us

Wouldn’t have been hard to get production with a cheap FA RB behind a strong OL. It doesn’t work the other way

Like I said in another thread,  you dont make those type of moves unless you feel like you have a QB that really needs it. All world RB, deep receiving core, expensive o line. This all comes back to bryce and getting the most out of him. He can't carry a load whatsoever so you gotta stack everything around him.

If anyone should have any interest in a reclamation project (salary aside), it should be the 49ers.  They have the all world roster that Bryce supposedly needs to be good.  Even though that all world roster isn't enough to carry Brock Purdy who's clearly a better QB at this point.

True. I just think big money guards were an attempt to make the offense viable for Bryce Young and the reason they ended up here is because other teams are smarter than to sink that $ into IOL, but I get your point.

One would have been a splurge, two was an overreaction and showed how bad Dan is at all of this. Following it up with a hurt RB in the 2nd when the other options would have been better than the guy who he traded into the 1st for is a poo show type moves. The OGs don't hurt this year, they hurt when we are paying both $36.25 million next year because of course they lowered both's this year cap hit because of freaking course they did.

Oh there were definitely smarter and more financially responsible ways to get it done.

But, it is what it is. One small win in a vast ocean of horseshif personnel moves over the last few years.

I generally do think Morgan will fare far better at pro personnel decisions than college evals.

Kudos to him for being the first GM in history, in my memory at least, to attempt to address the O-line problem. I would assume he would continue to work on the O-line and focus on the D-line next offseason.

Man, it’s like we always completely ignore the 2014-2017 OL as if it never existed. I think it’s the whole LT syndrome.

Gettleman was far from perfect but he did some decent work at OL. In 5 drafts, he got Turner, Moton, Williams and Norwell while adding Remmers (I know but he started 54 games for other teams), Oher and Speed Bump in FA. He started and ended with Ryan at C.

When you draft Moton and 3 others that get pro-bowls or 1st/2nd team all pros, that’s a decent job in 5 drafts. Our cap space also was terrible to start so it was draft and dumpster diving before adding speed bump. No $153M for two guards.

Morgan won’t have “fixed” the OL IMHO until we draft a starting C and RT replacement. We can’t fix this team in FA. We need rookies becoming above average/impact starters.

At what cost though? I would have been much more impressed with cheaper OGs that played well and chunks of that money spread around elsewhere.

DM gets credit for the Jackson and Johnson trades but both those guys are on 1 year rentals so the complete story isn't finished yet. Both good moves in cost and returns. The rest is very debatable.

Oh lets just get good cheapt guards! It's hard to find good OL play in this league.

Ofcourse we would prefer it to cost less but that is a meaningless sentiment.

Could've had our pick at center in the draft instead of spending a luxury pick on an injured RB while we have one already on the roster that's top 5 in rush yards

They gambled at center and a lot of us were miffed about it, for good reason.  Corbett is injury prone. Better pray Christensen hold up.

Could've traded back in 2023 instead of trading up for Bryce Young. Could've had Charbonnet and Dalton Kincaid. Could've taken a Center. Could've taken Tank Dell.

woulda, coulda, shoulda

Of course it worked. Any GM can throw a bunch of cash at proven commodities to improve a position group. We’ll see how well that money was spent in the near future when we can’t get assets elsewhere because we have too much cap invested in IOL for a QB who isn’t on the roster anymore.

as far as Hurney goes, I sure can discount his first round ability, because guess who else has great first round draft ability? Me, and I’m an idiot. The only time I disagreed with Hurndog’s 1st rounders was in 2012. I wanted Fletcher Cox over Keek. I’ll call that a tie although I could argue long term Cox would have been a better pick.

No it's not. That's why both OGs came from teams allowing them to walk after their rookie contracts ran out. I said cheaper not cheap.

Also hard to have a good oline when your C is on IR and aren't both OGs banged up already?

you're right. when I think of 2014-2017 I just think about Nate chandler and Byron bell.

    • You're absolutely right with what you are saying, but think about this. Revolving door at QB. How is Sam Darnold doing right now? How is Baker Mayfield doing right now? Both playing at an all pro, almost MVP caliber right now. Why did it not work here? I totally get that Tepper may not know how to win, but in the end, he's just the money guy. Talking about throwing things at walls and seeing if it sticks, I feel you brother. But why is it that nothing seems to stick? Look at this year, just when it seemed we had a glimer of hope our anchor on defense Brown, season ending injury. Do you think he would have made a difference in the last two games? And it's not just that... for some reason we just cannot get those diamond in the rough players in the draft that end up being those "Dogs" that Morgan speaks about. Players have to emerge, and YES we need better decision making. But unfortunately in the NFL, those decisions are like a coin flip. And it seems the Panthers are in an era where it's just not landing our way. Love him or hate him (mostly hate here, I get it), Tepper WANTS to win. He is hemorraging money with this team right now and the business man in him does not want to lose money. I get why everyone hates him, but even he needs a little luck when it comes to the offseason and trying to improve the team. This kind of thing is not easy to turn around. Panthers are not the only team. I mean, the Jets just fired Robert Saleh who I thought was a good coach 5 weeks in. I feel your pain, trust me, been here a long time with this team, all the ups and downs. I do think we have the right coaches and GM right now... we just NEED some damn luck at the QB position, and what would help with that is playmakers at WR/TE/RB! We have a top 10 Offensive line. But, we are decimated with injuries on defense. Just BAD LUCK... snake eyes. It wll all come together eventually, it has to... right? 🙂
