Anybody else disgusted with Richardson?

WOW!!!!!

First round yes, but beyond that odds of landing producitve players trends down. That's the reason value for picks decrease and phrases like "late round gems" "day 2 steals" came about. Even in rounds one or two you have excellent college players that can't make the transition to the pro level, be it a product of the college system or lack of top notch competition. Bad scouting? Maybe. But instances like this happen every year.

You'd have better odds of going to a horse race and winning than banking on your late round picks becoming conerstones of the franchise.

Case of posting before thinking...or at least clarifying.

exactly what cornerstones are needed that we have to address in the draft?

Oh really?

Ask the New England Patriots if their drafting is a crap shoot.

Tell them they only got "lucky" when they drafted players.

Theres a reason the Oakland Raiders are the Oakland Raiders and the New England Patriots are the New England Patriots.

Winning franchises are built in rounds 2-7.

true.

It seems inconsistent that we would go on a youth movement unless we had faith in the coach to be able to develop these guys and bring them along. Most teams that embark on a rebuilding process give the coach several seasons to build a contender. Look at Washington for example. They brought in a new coach, Shanahan, and dumped a bunch of veterans but at the same time aren't expecting an instant turnaround and gave them some help with McNabb. And if Richardson believes in Fox why not extend him? And if he doesn't believe in Fox then why not fire him at the end of last year and bring in another guy while you are engaging in the youth movement. Does he really need to see more from Fox one way or the other to make a decision about him?

.

JR doesn't want to pay a head coach during the lockout.

Specially the 10 million to Cowher ;)

Disgusted at the Big Cat? The Big Cat is showing what a great owner he is.....he is focused on after the lockout and all the teams actions show it. Carolina and there new coach will be a real threat for several seasons after the lockout.

It would be retarded to waste money, get into contracts w/ new FA, and trade picks during Fox's lame duck year.

i was really upset at first, mainly due to the shock of losing 9 or so starters. once i calmed down, though, and the dust settled, i can see we're not in too bad of shape. losing peppers was huge. you can't replace a guy like that, but frankly i'm glad he's gone because i hated watching him every sunday wondering whether or not i should be rooting for him. if he wants greed to control his life and act like he hates it here, good riddance. losing diggs was bad, but james anderson can take over just fine. connor is another option to evaluate in training camp. we just lose a little depth is all. the thing i was most upset about was not getting a wide receiver in free agency. there were lots of options, but there is still the draft so we'll see how that goes. i don't think the situation with our team is worth freaking out about.

And that puts the panthers at about average then, were not the raiders and were not even close to the patriots.

Okay, you are using the best and worst examples. Nice, so how about the franchises that don't have a senile, old, speed-only driven criteria, draft hack and a team that has had WAY more than 7 picks for the last several drafts leaving room for a few errors? They all suck at drafting if only one or two of their 2-7 picks last?

I'm not trying to get snippy here, just saying that statment was a bit wreckless. The draft is any thing but a given and yes, is likened to a crap shoot. The one pick you bank on is you first, but as you know that isn't always a given. You would like to hope the second and third will stick around for serval years and contribute, but anything after that is a bonus.

My point exactly, he is focused on after the lockout which is 2 years from now. So you are ok with not focusing on each year, regardless of CBA? So we have a bad year next year, a lockout the next year, and then we can be good again, with some of our players like Steve Smith 2 years older.

In the immortal words of Herm Edwards ..................."you play to win, you play to win the game." Every year, not just after the lockout.

So high price free agents is the way to go?

Please see: Washington Redskins

It is far more risky to me to give someone a big pay day and hope that they are still motivated to be great. And I am not the one doing the actual paying.

Then to draft someone who is still young and hungry.

true.

It's easy to play devil's advocate using outliers. The bulk of the League doesn't suck at drafting and hardly have the majority of their non-first round picks pan out.

Lastly I wasn't addressing the Panthers, I was addressing the statement that the draft isn't a crap shoot.

I'm sorry, but given the number of drafted players cut, any statement to the contrary is obsurd.
