I'm headed back to Linville. Gonna try to find an aid station along the way to bring as much as I can but oddly every church I've driven by is doing nothing for their community.

A lot of folks still stuck in their houses with no way out and a lot of flooded homes at least needing the saturated sheetrock ripped out. I have my dad coming with his contractor's van with a lot more tools.

I sat in my truck and watched 31 inches of rain fall in Busick NC. Hiked out to Marion Saturday. Highway 80 is just wiped off the map with mud slides. I think I was one of the first outsider through this area. Unbelievable damage, houses gone, people were still missing, people in house hurt. But these people were offering water food to me. I about cried seeing it all. I have felt guilty all week. My little cabin is ok and feel very fortunate. We dropped a lot of stuff to Speedway for delivery.

Was in Durham yesterday talking with some folks, native NC folks, and they have absolutely no clue just how remote some areas of western NC are. We may never know the real toll on human life this storm took for months, if at all.

As a former resident of Asheville, it's difficult to look at some of the damage without thinking of the smaller communities not located in the population center. Edneyville, Gerton, Fairview. Some of those smaller communities are only accessed by small roads to begin with.

Eric Rudolph eluded the FBI for 5 years living in the woods of Western NC, if that gives you any idea.

Love Busick. People up S Toe are survivors, you’re in good hands. Stay safe!

Dropped off a load of goods in Newland. Linked up with Samaritan's Purse and they needed help in a neighborhood that I knew. It's all rich people's vacation homes. I'm like nah, if you have somewhere to go focusing on people's primary residences that they're blocked on or uninhabitable that's what I'm here to do. If the focus is vacation homes I have plenty of poo to do at my own house. They completely understood so I rolled out. I'm going to check in on Black Mountain and Swannanoa tomorrow but honestly it seems like everywhere that's accessible by vehicle has an overabundance of volunteers. If somebody wants to helicopter my ass in with tools to inaccessible places I'll eat a bunch of Dramamine and go but other than that looks like I'm about to shift gears and focus on my own stuff.

Been trying to get out to the Sutherland area. Where Hoskins Fork meets the North Fork. I spent a large portion of my childhood in a run down farm house with no refrigerator but a spring fed hold house and one wood burning stove on Oscar Rd. There's people I care about a lot that I haven't heard from yet out there. Couldn't make it through hwy 88 to get there.

    • Strange, every news article and tweet I just searched all mentioned waivers. It is definitely his sixth year of at least 6 games. All I was trying to think of earlier was at the vet min could he beat out Bryce in camp next year lol. He's kinda got the old Darnold issue where he can obviously launch deep balls and qb run at a level Bryce will never achieve, but it sounds like he would be content being like a Josh Allen backup who doesn't throw the whole game plan out the window if he has to come in for a series or two. If we had him and for some reason still wanted to start Bryce he would kinda do what Justin Fields was doing the other night with Dangeruss, coming in for designed runs and maybe some play action/triple option rpo things to go deep. That would be so obvious and sad though. At least Russ can still sling it 40 yards in the air with a flick of the wrist
    • Too late to edit above but the quote is from this Diane Russini article in the Athletic: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5941684/2024/11/23/russinis-what-im-hearing-the-day-the-jets-fell-apart-and-the-broncos-rallied-belichick-best-fits/ Okay.. there you have sorry I left that out the first post.  Also waivers keep the contract intact. That is the major difference in released and waived. It's all in that link from the other post.
    • Okay so I am reading something in The Athletic and it says that Jones had to pass through waivers. So I don't know. I looked this stuff up when we were number one there all offseason and I thought it said 4 years in the league got you vested, as they call it.  Vested gets you out of waivers as I understood it. I probably got something wrong, but when I think about the slack quality of journalism these days I wonder about that. So I went and looked, again. Well, well.  For everyone: "When a player has accrued at least four seasons in the NFL, they are considered a vested veteran. When these vested veterans get cut, they are released and their contract is terminated. When a vested veteran is released, they are an unrestricted free agent that can sign with any NFL team, and the team that released them doesn’t need to provide any additional compensation." It runs it all down here, where the quotes came from: https://www.profootballnetwork.com/waived-vs-released-nfl/ As far as Jones, the team turned down his 5th year option so I knew that meant he had 4 years in, because they re-signed him anyway, after turning down the much cheaper extra year.  The Athletic is owned by the New York Times so I shouldn't be surprised. That paper was an institution once upon a time but they let their standards go.
