They had a 1000 year rain fall before this storm hit. I think they build to 100 year standards in civil engineering typically. This is so brutal.  Still waiting to hear from people up there. I was actually getting tired of the coast and looking to move up that way. I guess everywhere is fugged.

This is one of the those once in a lifetime events unless you're 100 years or older. There's always going to be something no matter where you live, hurricanes, tornadoes, fires, snow, etc.

The data isn't all that old, reliability as coming into play the further you go back, if I understand correctly. They said the water was at a 1000 year storm level before this hit. That's way beyond 100 year cycle.

Yeah there is always something for sure. I just didn't have hurricanes in the mountains in my head.

I'm not sure about the data. I do know people that live there say this is the worst it's been since the 1920s for some areas and the 1940s for others. That's why I go with the 100 year/once in a lifetime thing.

I didn't have tornadoes in the mountains in my head either, but we've posted pictures and videos earlier in this thread of that happening near Banner Elk. As the old saying goes, poo happens.

I can see those missing shops and all being replaced with some kind of chain BS if it gets rebuilt at all.

Did you see the reports about the investors and rich folk running to Maui and buying up as much land and the remaining houses as they could? That's going to happen here even more now than it was. The vultures will descend on the area because they know folk will be desperate.

Sad but could be.

There are engineering standards based on the historical data that they build to at different levels. Cost plays a big part. It also appears to be growing.

One of the favorite places for my wife and I to go for several years has been the Asheville/Black Mountain area. We'd go there for anniversary trips and every once in a while take the kids up there. We've been talking about retiring up that way and aside from being expensive we worried about the winter weather, but we love the area so much it would be worth it. Never thought about the effects of flooding there.

A big part of the reason we love it so much was just because of the people we met up there. So open and welcoming of everyone.

Now so much tragedy. It's a heart breaker for sure
