My Mother visited 3 Doctors in Florida and 4 in North Carolina before anyone cared

My mother will be having her leg amputated tomorrow from the knee down (if we are lucky).  It could go higher on the leg.  She was seen by so many doctors in Florida where she lived that completely ignored it and told her it was a spider bite.  I am posting this because everyone absolutely has to question everything that feels wrong with these people who clearly don’t care at all.  Turns out she had gang green in her foot.  If this was caught earlier she could have had a chance to save her foot at worst.  Cautionary tale… please force these idiots to address things realistically

BTW…the real problem was blood clots in her leg.  She has dementia very badly and totally unaware of where she is or what day it is.  Please force these doctors to address your love ones.  It is pretty amazing how much these caregivers don’t care at all.  At all.

I never cease to be amazed at the disparity in treatment women receive.  Seems like once every week or so I hear a woman's story where her doctors didnt listen, they downplayed symptoms, or dismissed the level of discomfort she experienced.

Sorry for your mom but Im afraid there is something broken when it comes to women's healthcare.

I have a bunion on my right foot I'm going to have to have surgically treated because a dumbass doctor thought I had gout 8 years ago. I told her that I REALLY don't think it's gout because it would be a massive coincidence to develop a novel gout attack that precisely coincided with building a patio and lugging literally ton of material up and down steps for several days on end. I'm very sure this is some type of overuse injury I'm just trying to figure out exactly what and how I need to address it. She remained convinced it was actually gout so I just said fug it and limped around for several weeks until it finally got to the point I could pretty much function normally though it stayed painful for over a year. It's my own dumbass fault for not getting a second opinion from an actual podiatrist but it is what it is. At the very least I should've just gone and gotten myself a walking boot and worn it until the worst of the pain subsided. You have to advocate for yourself and your healthcare.

It's so true.  My father passed two weeks ago after being in the hospital for 40 days.   If you are an older person that doesn't have someone advocating for you they'll just stick you somewhere and let you rot on a floor of a hospital.  Luckily my father had my mother and family pushing people to do their jobs and even then the care was suboptimal.  You'd think in a major city it would be better but there was no middle ground for care from nurses/doctors, it was either FANTASTIC or TERRIBLE.  The healthcare system in America is beyond broken and it's insane to me that the populace isn't having marches about it but I guess no one cares till they've really seen it up close.

Our health care system is broken, and the patients and workers within are suffering mightily.

There's got to be a better way.

So glad she made it through well and praying that there will be some relief and smoother times ahead for her and your family.

Thanks man…unfortunately talking with her today it’s clear she will never come back mentally.  She was very upset we couldn’t go to dinner at the grill.  The grill was a place she went to back when she lived in Myrtle Beach 20 yrs ago.  She also told me her friends from New York came out of the closets and visited for a while today.  Very sad

When dementia gripped my grandmother (and eventually took her), we each spent time with her and would try to correct her to what was reality and what wasn't. It was very tough on my Dad who she lived with for as long as they could care for her.

It seemed like she had become detached from her own timeline and would slide up and down it wildly. As my Dad said, "somedays I'm me to her, somedays I'm my Dad, somedays I'm her father, somedays I'm just the guy who works here. I tried correcting her but it just upset her. I found out that the best thing is to just not correct her and let her live out where ever and whenever she is."

And I'm not going to lie, it gets tough and eventually they leave their own timeline and it becomes unmanageable. Hold on to yourself and the ones you love through it all. Prayers for you and yours, man.
