Matt Waldman on Panthers offense

Recommended Posts

Bryce Young's "best game" to date against the Packers.

Take note that for the majority of this clip he is standing in the pocket and making plays and pushing the ball downfield.

What people perceive to be "his game" is an improviser outside of the pocket is not going to work in the NFL.

I really wanted Bryce to work out because it's best for the panthers in the long run instead of going back to the drawing board.

But after upgrading his line and his weapons, he goes out and performs like that.. And acts like it doesn't bother him. fug him

They should be playing as if we still have McCaffery. Bryce has to be rolling out and throwing on the run for the majority of his snaps. He is a detriment in the pocket because he can't see over the line and lacks the arm strength to be a deep threat.  He should be scurrying around in the backfield until a WR finds seperation in the short field, otherwise he's gotta pick up the yards himself or dump it off. Dink and dunk effectively enough and defenses will give opportunities to chuck it deep and pray. Maybe he's not accurate enough to pull it off but it's the only path to success for him, and what drives me mad is we knew that was his game when we drafted him and still aren't doing it for whatever reason

I missed the game (great fortune that ended up being) but it sounds like they still aren't really doing that. What's crazier is that apparently the OL held up well so they're not the issue. Why NOT do that if this is the alternative? Is Young just a deer in headlights or is Canales another snake oil salesman?

Both.

I only saw them blitz 5 guys. NO was brining extra and constanly winning against a better line. I have no idea why GB didn't blitz more. Really bad game plan and pressure.

Their defensive coordinator had been taking a lot of heat at that time for his playcalling and their secondary was trash.

This perfomance was followed by an abomination of a game against the Jaguars minus Trevor Lawrence.

That makes a lot of sense.

Why are we allowing intentionally misleading topic titles?

Matt Weldman in that tweet does not say Bryce Young isn't allowed to change calls at the line.  No source provided that Mayfield claims to have not had the freedom.  Weldman asks the question if Bryce has freedom or not based off a play he watched.

And maybe he doesn't have freedom.  I'm not looking to defend Young or Canales. Just think we could be a bit more accurate with how we phrase things.  It is just as likely that Young didn't properly read the defense and failed to signal for a hot route.

I would say we're over the 24 hour over reaction period, but this is the Huddle....bup bup bup?

Now that we have 17 official games from Bryce, this is not good.  I'm a Bryce "hoper" in that I want him to be the guy so we can move forward as a franchise.  I caught a PFF video about the results from their analytics perspective:

What really stood out is that Bryce has more games of sub 40 PFF play than he does over 70 (which is slightly above average for QB play).  Now we all have opinions about PFF grading, which isn't perfect.  But we've also been subjected to the incredibly bad play calling and execution of offense under Reich and this week of Canales.

So what does this mean for the next 2-4 weeks?  Not much.  I think we're going to have to ride with Bryce to see if he's able to actually play better...  If we're 0-5 and he's playing like garbage do you wrap it up and see how Andy can ruin our draft position?  If he plays average but the D looks like swiss cheese and we're 0-5?

Look, I don't know what the answer is.  It's not my job thankfully.  Canales needs to get the football right with this team (his words).  If not, we're going to see a repeat against the Chargers.

We need to ride Bryce though.  He's going to have to figure it out.  Man up as the old farts like me say.  Canales needs to toughen this team up, especially with the loss of Brown.  All things considered, I won't mind us losing so long as we're playing hard and playing with some sense.  That was missing Sunday.

Not to beat a dead horse but Bryce isnt going to "figure it out".  He doesnt have the physical attributes to be a nfl qb.  he just doesnt and he has too many ingrained  bad habits that he simply refuses to change.  Hes toast
