Only way to measure success this season...

is by answering the question: 

Does Bryce young look like he's going to be a franchise QB for next 10-15 years?  

If that is true by end of year, then we likely have been able to :

- protect BY with a solid OL play 

- have good weapons around to spread the ball around

- have a solid running game to keep defenses off balance

- are able to move the ball and score more than 20 pts per game consistently

- BY is able to be a playmaker and make others better 

Even if it doesn't translate to a lot of wins because we still have so many holes or thin spots on the roster, I'll be happy and excited for next year. 

On the other hands, If BY does not look like HIM, has another bad year or looks like he will be nothing more than a game manager, then it's a failure even if we win 8-9 games because it means we'll be back in QB purgatory for years to come.   

Nothing else really matters, does it?

Agreed. This year is 100% about evaluating our QB position. If he’s not significantly improved from last year, regardless of our record, then they have to move on.

I agree. Making that trade for a guy that just turns out to be a serviceable game manager would still be a huge blow to the franchise

Unless our defense falls apart, I can’t imagine a scenario where a good QB + good OL + good receivers + good run game doesn’t translate to wins.

I use to think that but the margin for errors being so small the difference even with those things are minute. Special teams, field position and coaching can be the small differences that cause us or any team to lose games. Playing a slightly better QB is also a factor even with good QB play Rodger’s Mahomes Jackson Allen etc they’re just better, special teams missed field goals or weak punts giving the other team better starting field position consistently in the game and lastly a slightly better coach better clock  management and in game adjustments are what really lead to winning with most teams being close in talent levels. Being that most games are one score games those things are usually the difference in winning and losing but you’re also right and improvement in all those areas definitely should lead to more wins if the defensive doesn’t fall apart.

I'm not judging this season by wins and losses, we just need to pass the eye test. Just be a competitive team to watch, and not so predictable like we have been the last few seasons.

Yup. Regardless of record, need to see growth. Even close losses like 27-24 where he performs and we know, I can accept that.

As was said: makes guys better. That's a really big one. 

And burn some defensive backs. You normally have to make the defenses fear someone getting behind them. It gets a little easier when they do.

we don't have to look like we're a playoff team. we just have to look like we're trending towards being a good team. We have to see legit potential and improvement.

and the burden of it has to spread across all fronts. if we are expecting to be carried by only one or two parts of the team, we're failing.   

All this needs to be clicking all season: OL blocking, receivers getting open and catching the ball, run game pushing forward, BY being the field general he needs to be, and the whole unit moving the ball forward into the end zone.

Success, to me, is if the coaching staff shows they are uo to it even if Young isnt.
