I have a bachelors degree in computer science and was in the Air Force for 20 years. In addition, I have my A+, CISCO, and MCSE certifications. I can not find a computer job and am relegated to working as a drivers license examiner.

My only saving grace is I do some hardware/software work out of my home making a little bit of extra money. I would die for a computer job!!

On the bright side, I received a letter from the VA saying that my application made it through the first step and should be getting a call to set up an interview! I'm not holding my breath though!

Good luck finding a job... You might have to do something you don't want to until you can find the job you want. Good luck!

It's a tough job market out there and especially so for those who aren't experienced or who don't have a specific focus. Changing industries is always a big step, but you're still young and can afford to make moves (and possible mistakes) like that and roll with it.

BTW, I majored in English as well. I'm now a mortgage banker working with numbers all day long. But I am a damn good and articulate talker.

meh, college.. don't think I'll ever make it to campus. don't see the point. other than the hundreds of hot women.

you might want to do some market research on this... however, you may generate more business by selling the angle of search engine optimization than just making a website..

there are plenty of businesses who can make a website. there are plenty of templates out there to edit text and make your own website. One thing businesses will pay attention to that maybe they aren't utilizing now is a business who will bring more business to their business...

just something I've noticed with a few companies I've come across, I could be wrong about the niche.. It's not my specialty, but they seem to be doing well. however, I made a website for my mom who is running for House of Rep for NC. any noob can do it... find a niche and take advantage.. find an angle to make the sale...

I'll see if the missus' bizzness needs any more freelancing copywriters.

I'd certainly appreciate it -- that's a field I think I'd do well in. I've always wanted (and planned) to work my way into more of a creative writing position. Right now I'm writing content for a site (product descriptions, blog posts, newsletters, social media, etc.).

You can do a lot more with an English major than you think, you just have to look and accept that you're not going to get your dream job necessarily.

I think you're right. For me, I decided to major in English knowing that I would enjoy to some extent the many jobs for which an English degree would be beneficial. I was a business major before making the switch, and I don't regret it.

SEO is huge, and I don't see any reason that it slows down. It is ever-changing, and a good SEO can do pretty well for themselves. That's also a good part of what I do day in and day out. Sometimes it's actually pretty fun.

So, like, you hide "*****, sex, sluts, anal, porn, and facial" somewhere on webpages!?

Sadly, I don't write about anything nearly that interesting. I write about air and water filters. It's a pretty mundane industry, but it does force you to be even more creative to create engaging content.

Maybe I should just start throwing in the aforementioned words and see what happens? :D

that's what I was thinking.. for anyone wanting to get into web design, this is where I would start. one company was charging $200/mo for a one page website to show up on google for a company's business...
