The Jets Joint Practice Thread: HOT Take Edition

We know now that last year was a poo show. That has happened. Playing more starters in the preseason would not have changed that. So when people say look at last year it’s a moot point. Preseason didn’t cause us to suck. We sucked all year long with 17 games worth of live regular season reps.

Where are you getting this about preseason being the reason we sucked? Nobody said that. Preseason is all about test driving and evaluation especially for a teamwith heavy turnover from previous yesr. It helps, but nobody saying it's THE reason a season fails. If anything what was said about last year was how fans were downplaying the struggles in pre season and chalking it up to "hiding the playbook" and when the season started nothing changed. It was actually worse, those same fans are using the same rehtoric this year and that's what got some people annoyed if anything.

Yeah I actually bought in last season and was one who believed what they said about hiding the playbook unfortunately. I figured they knew what they were talking about and weren't feeding us a line of crap. Boy was I wrong!

“We approached preseason last year like it didn't matter and we had it all figured out. That ended up in us handing the #1 overall pick to Chicago to get DJ Moore a QB.”

That is the quote I was originally responding to.  It’s in this thread and they aren’t the only person to say something like this. My point is a lot more went into us sucking that out preseason approach. Hence why we sucked just as bad in week 18 as week 1. The reps could have helped sure, but we got plenty of regular season reps with very little progress. It was just a poo show.

It can buy the staff some time telling the public they are better than they are sure. I don’t think anyone is falling for that again. No one is expecting us to be great this time. My point is it had little actual effect on our season. It just let them raise expectations a little longer, but I don’t see this staff doing that. DC isn’t talking about hiding playbooks. He is talking about ironing out the depth chart and trying to keep players healthy. He is basically saying our depth isn’t great, he wants to figure it out and we could really be screwed if a couple of starters get hurt.

And half of the $150M Body Guards. No DJ, no XL, no Damien Lewis, Hunt went out for awhile, and the TEs were short manned. I'd say they should be much better when healthy. Throw in a 2nd round RB by week 4  and who knows?

🔥 HOT TAKE 🔥

She's got a point. I like that.

Technically though, I think(?), the GM wants dawgs, and the HC is the one that ‘got mad’.

Speaking of, that's the first i've read of the major lack of pass rush during the joint practice. Gotta think they'll hit the waiver wire for that especially if Wonnum and Barno can't get on the field anytime soon.

It’s important to note that with DJ Wonnum and Amare Barno sidelined, the Panthers are already thin at the edge rush position. Add to that Jadeveon Clowney being given the day off, the defense struggled to get any pressure on Rodgers, who took advantage of the time by driving the ball down the field effortlessly.

The coaching staff has said that they are comfortable with their pass rush group, but outside of Clowney, no one has consistently proven that they are able to apply pressure. Add to that a now banged-up secondary, a defensive unit that has always been the lone bright spot could become a weakness.

Causing penalties doesn't make one a dawg. Dawgs are are mentally tough and good players. They are assets not liabilities

Agreed. A dawg is not someone who throws a ball at the opposing defense when he has 1 career TD in 3 years of averaging 45% of snaps. A dawg is someone who’s showed up in real games. It’d be one thing if he was a hungry rookie, not a vet in year 4. Remember Vernon Butler? He might have been the only player giving effort and getting penalties for it when the Colts smoked us a few years ago en route to a 1-7 or 0-8 finish. No one called him a dawg for drawing a penalty.
