Panthers have a perfect Lockout FO

I started think about this why isn't our FO lock up for at least 1 more year. Think about it. How good has Marty and company been at finding good scrub talent here lately? How good has Fox shown he can take scrubs and have then play at a respectable level even against top NFL competition?

Think about it, when a player goes down it seems like we have someone there who comes in and plays well (maybe not pro-bowler or anything but well). Nick Goings came in that one year we were decimated by injuries and had quite a few 100 yard games. In 07 with a UDFA rookie QB if we hadn't of had so many BS calls in that Cowboys game would have most likely made the playoffs.

Then last year we were without both starting Tackles, our all-pro RB, our pro-bowl WLB, our SLB, and the last game our all-pro WR and still looked like one of the best teams in the league. I mean you have to give credit were credit is due Foxy has a way of pulling one out of his a$$. He seems to make lemonade when given lemons.

So my question is why isn't this FO lock up through next season? Seems like they would be perfect for rounding up nobody talent and getting them to gel and play well together.

They've done a great job with o-line. I think we've got the best core offensive line in the league. We can put Schwartz and Bernadau up against the best players in the league and compete, that says alot about D. Magazu and the talent we have on the line.

Contract years bring out the best in people! Extensions are nice gesture when given early but this is an oppurtunity to see how good Fox/Hurney can be with some added pressure

They are not a good front office. I commend them fo going big on defense over the years with picks like Pep, Davis, and Gamble and not being lured to the offensive losers that have crossed their face. They made great core selections with these guys in the past and have carefully chose offensive producers like D-will and J-stew. In actuality they have done OK in the lower rounds and UFA's with quite a few producers as well the most notably being Hoover with King being a close second.

However, the free agency has been their downfalll in the past. Panthers FO drafts above average but the other moves seem to bring their overall approval rating WAAY down historically.

In regards to this line of thinking and the approaching turmoil of lockout/no CBA on the horizon, I am actually somewhat happy that they are recognizing their deficient areas and focusing on what they feel they can do well.

I know it would be great if they could do both but they can't. It's also obvious that they do not like to tip their hand in FA and prefer to maintain the attributes of being passive on that front when it comes to getting rookies signed and in camp and vets re-signed or re-negotiated. These guys don't do a Dan Snyder backflip for every UFA that has graced the Berman Monday morning "Blitz" at one point in time or another. I see value in that.

Our FO sucks overall and I have berated them over the years but I am trying to find positives here and the fact that they seem to have an M.O. and are sticking to it is just that from my perspective.

They are not without faults. Hurney was an idiot for that Jake contract extension and I would argue with Peps tagging last year. Fox is an idiot for being to stubborn and not being able to see talent because of the Jake blinders. I just couldn't think of a better available FO out there for coaching a super scrub team. Also think how well our Scrubs always seem to look in preseason (K. Moore this preseason).

who are the best free agents we could have afforded over the fox/huney years that we passed on?

while i agree with some of your points... i wouldn't go so far as to say that they suck. true, they've missed out on some big names in free agency... but think about it this way... it's a good thing they haven't gone after anyone, especially big name players like Brandon Marshall... because the last time they brought in a big name (albeit, David Carr) it was a complete fail. yet we've succeeded so well with drafting players who fit our philosophy both on and off the field. so i don't necessarily take it as a bad thing, but a smart thing.

and i honestly think Jerry Richardson is waiting to sign Fox to a long term deal because he does want him to feel a little pressure, but i'm leaning towards Fox coming back with an extension next year. hurney as well...

FA is typically a great opportunity to fill a hole or 2.. the FO has never been great at doing that..

I do think Lucas was a good move, but he trailed off after '05... Keyshawn did his duty pulling in solid #2 numbers.. but he was at the end of his career..
