Training Camp Day 9

Didn’t Canales come in talking about how preseason matters?

Coming off of a season the way we did and with the offense looking like garbage in camp, in what world should Bryce playing significant time in the preseason be up for debate?

Ja'Tavion Sanders' presser

  • Making the most out of opportunity. Ian and Tommy have been tremendous help for him and he's grateful. Taking it day-by-day.
  • Spoke with Coach Banks (his TE coach @ Texas) who has been asking about him on Twitter/X. Going to get up with him and chop it up afterwards.
  • Didn't get a chance to talk to Greg Olsen today but is going to get with him at Tight End U.
  • Felt things clicking today, coming day-by-day while Tommy and Ian stay in his ear. They're showing him what it's like to be a pro on and off the field. Ian's been helping him with keeping up with his body as an 8yr veteran. Diet was something he personally approached, but the recovery process has been something he's learning.
  • Getting closer with Bryce as he gets more reps with the 1s.
  • Not worried about the number he's wearing.
  • Has a lot more free time as a pro, which is the most drastic change from college. Has to manage his time better. Main focus after practice is recovering physically.
  • Singing "Beautiful Crazy" by Luke Combs for the rookie talent show.

I know its not standard, but holy hell all things considered young should play a quarter, then a half against the jets.  Its imperative to get this offense working

When you are the head coach of this inept franchise you are destined to make horrible decisions.

Bryce Young up

  • JT is super hardworking and is a sponge. Has done a great job with coaches and on the field. Whenever something happens he always turns around and asks questions to find out what happened, whether it was his fault, and what they need to do.
  • JT is going up today for the second time because he didn't go long enough the first time.
  • Having a bunch of different targets is great for Bryce because that's what happens during the season. They're not game planning nor putting people in specific places, so everyone is getting to run every route at every receiver position.
  • Trusts in coach and whether or not Canales believes that Bryce should play in preseason is up to them.
  • Last year was a similar situation preseason-wise and he was able to learn a lot since it was his first NFL "game." Going to trust coach whether or not he plays.
  • You learn how good people are in the NFL in preseason or regular season. Best of the best going at it every down. Saw how everybody came out with the same intensity last year and seeing that level of play was cool to see.
  • Super confident in whatever coaches decide re: playing Thursday. They've been in the league longer than he is so he's going to trust them. Talked up the defense and mentioned joint practices as ways to challenge himself and get better.
  • Speaking on this year and this group, the competitiveness has been good. Guys are getting shuffled to different spots and they're just trying to learn. Nobody is comparing to previous experiences, just focusing on growing now. Willing to make mistakes now and correct them rather than brushing it off. Big point of emphasis is to not make the same mistake twice. Been great watching the receiver group respond to that.
  • David Newton getting parried again. Asked about guys not getting open, but then mentioned if they did get open the line didn't protect or Bryce didn't get it to them. "Last year was last year." New group, new coaching staff, new philosophy, etc. Last year is part of the cumulative past and they're focused on the now.
  • Hasn't learned anything he couldn't already see in OTAs re: Diontae but seeing him in person shows how much of a competitor he is. Things are tough even in ideal conditions, but he comes out fired up every day and gives every rep effort. Comes up after practice wanting to get more work on things that they messed up in practice. Diontae cares a lot for the details and has been nothing but accountable.
  • Not pre-planning for the Patriots because they're in "camp mode." Knows it's going to be a limited game plan but hasn't gotten a chance to look specifically into the Patriots and their defense yet. Going to trust the scouting and stuff they go over when they start the process.
  • Super important as a QB and leader to get to know his WRs on and off the field. Everyone is different. If you don't take time to learn how they run routes, how they want the ball, etc then it shows up on the field. It doesn't stop on the field either, it goes into the locker room and outside afterwards. It all translates. Grateful to be in the position that he is with the receivers that they have. Talked up the locker room as a whole (was asked specifically about building relationships with his receivers).

That's a wrap for today.

No Johnson works a lot of the area’s Bryce is able to get the ball to. Mingo is more a deep threat than Johnson. Mingo’s numbers suffered big time last year due to Young’s arm. Johnson will still get his even if deep shots are limited

We will see. I still believe Mingo's biggest problems are his own. Hope I am wrong. Getting tired of bust WR after bust WR.

What Canales said about the depth guys going with the ones, that is a big reason the OL is not gelling I would think.

Once he has his fill of that they will get to work on the starting unit and hopefully start showing some progress.

It seems like another thing where you sacrifice quick results for maybe elevating your depth or seeing if you need to cut bait on a young guy?  Seeing who can step up?

Person is reporting young may not play in any of the preseason games.  Did he say that or is he being misinterpreted?   Because that is wild as hell.

The only half assed logic would be because our OL is such a mess they don't want him to get injured. But....I mean, that ain't gonna change.

    • That excuse would be interesting if it was really true. In the first halves, we’ve given up 50 points. In the 2nd halves we’ve given up 23 points. Both the Chargers and the Saints scored TDs on their opening drives, before Young even stepped on the field. The Saints scored on every single possession they had until we finally stopped one drive in the 4th quarter. This D has been run over, regardless of how bad Young played.
