Joe Person presents: Panthers stock report, training camp week 1

Wasn't it reported that Icky was struggling the other day?  Did he turn things around towards the end?

The way it seems to go now is that out of 100 reps (for example) we see one or two bad reps in a distant twitter vidwo and it gets reported they are struggling or their stock is down.

None of the people watching know wha they are looking or what they are trying to do to begin with

Couldn't get on the field in *4 years.  He was a 5th year senior.

If he couldn't get on the field how did make catches and score those years?

In 4 seasons combined he had 42 catches for 423 yards and 5 tds.  That's 4 seasons added together.  I think it's nicer to say he wasn't on the field.  A lot of players go undrafted putting those numbers up in one season.

He caught 40 something balls from Bryce last year as bad as he was. It is possible for a player to develop believe it or not so I would hold off at least this season before writing him off as another training training camp star who can never translate to regular season. He didn't look as good last training camp as this one so far so could actually be development who knows but I'm not ready to write him off already just because he is having a good camp.

Doesn't know 23-10? Did you see how much of a loaded made to confuse question it was? It was done on purpose to get hot takes guys to laugh and freak out. This entire thing is such a jump to conclusions hot take before there has even been two weeks of training camp. If you hate being a fan so much then why are you here? 31 other NFL teams to choose from as well

You do understand you are saying it's possible for a player to develop to Panthers fans, right?

You know how fuging rare that is here?

I don't even think the answer was 23-10 (i.e. 13).  "If you were born 10 years ago, how old would you be" - you'd be 10 years old...period.  The "you're 23 years old..." preceding the question is irrelevant and is why the framing of the question seems to have confused a lot of people, yourselves included.

The answer is 10, I was also wondering where the 23-10 thing came from. That would have been the wrong answer also...

Stock up

WR Jonathan Mingo

The second-year wideout barely resembles the guy who looked unsure in his routes and in general during an underwhelming rookie season. Mingo is running crisp patterns, getting open and grabbing everyone’s attention, most notably Bryce Young’s.
Young said it’s clear Mingo is playing with more confidence in his second NFL camp. “You can see him playing more freely. Even though it’s a new system, he understands the system,” Young said. “He’s running routes really free. Doing a great job on and off coverage, having a plan with stuff. He’s made some really big-time catches.”
Mingo needs to carry the momentum into the season. But after joining Young in California this summer for throwing sessions, the two are very much on the same page.

Stock down

WR Xavier Legette

Legette was his own toughest critic after the first camp practice, when he chastised himself for not paying closer attention to the details and for failing to “leave everything out there on the field.” It hasn’t been all bad for the first-round pick from South Carolina. He just hasn’t yet made the type of splash plays that characterized his final college season and that prompted the Panthers to trade up to draft him with the 32nd pick. The knock on Legette leaving South Carolina was his route running, so that might be part of his game that takes time to develop. But with good size and straight-ahead speed, Legette should still find ways to impact the offense as a rookie.

Legette is reported as advertised, so it isn't much to get aggravated about.  He's a bit stiff, lacks short-area burst, unrefined route runner but it's nothing that hasn't been overcome before - he just doesn't work himself open/doesn't have the route running nuances down.  Posts, crossers, vertical routes, and creative stuff on the run will be what we give him.  Don't expect much.  Temper expectations for our 1st rounder.

Many of us thought we needed a fresh, route-running savvy Z/Slot combo type (I.E. Ladd, Pearsall, Polk) but they clearly wanted a downfield high-ceiling type that could be used in some creative slot capacity.  Time will tell if this was a good move but I'm not placing much expectations for him to get even moderate volume until at least halfway through the season.

Chaisson is the big news here--that would be huge.   Legette?  he can be brought along slowly--with names such as Johnson, Mingo, Thielen, Smith-Marsette, Coker, and maybe TMJ showing positive growth.  If Legette needs a year, we may have to put him in the special class and give him some modifications.
