A little boy's birthday card

Recommended Posts

So last year at camp, I took a football shaped birthday card for a friend's kid and had some of the players sign that card. The little fella is a pretty big football fan, so I thought it'd make for a fun gift to him.

But an odd thing happened

Among the signatures I got...

Geoff Schwartz

Mackenzy Bernadeau

Kenny Moore

Dan Connor

Sherrod Martin

Matt Moore

There were one or two other guys, but those are the ones I remember off the top of my head.

So what's odd about them?

Almost every guy who signed the card was a backup at the time, but by season's end they had become either full-time (most) or at least part-time starters. The one vet starter who signed - Brad Hoover - is now gone :skep:

I was considering doing the same thing this year, but the current starters on the team might hope that I don't

(younger guys, though? they'll be fighting for a chance to sign)

Hope not. I'd hate to see us go through that many starters on an annual basis

But the team symbol is a black cat, isn't it :sosp:

But to be fair if they play as well as they did as replacement players I wouldn't care. Martin look like a star, Dan Connor racked up double digit tackles, both Scwartz and Bernadeau look great on the oline, and Matt Moore had some of the best performances every by a Panthers QB.

Line depth was a big worry last offseason after Hangarter and Omiyale defected. Turned out we were fine.

I was surprised I thought it would come back to bite us and in a way it did. We lost two all-pro Ts. But who knew those two would look so good. If we would have lost Kalil we would have been toast but it wasn't the issue I thought it would be.

I am really think we should have given Fox and company a deal to get us through a possible lockout year. Look what he has been able to do with scubs at times. Might be his calling coaching a super scrub team. Super Bowl 2012.

So does this mean Dan Connor will beat out James Anderson??

During the offseason prior to the 2003 year, I used to put pics of guys we were trying to sign as free agents in my avatar on the official board.

Funny thing, all the ones who had been in my avatar but didn't sign with us either got injured or had bad years.

No, I don't believe either of these things are "cause and effect". Still, it's an odd little coincidence, eh? :skep:
