Honestly, when draft picks fail it's almost never for athletic reasons.  If you get drafted, you have the athletic talent.  It's all those other things that can't be measured which cause failure.

I wish the guy the best.  There are certainly those rare players who finally figure it out.  If we just get a rotational option out of this guy, that's a win for us.

Guys get played out of position often and then there are political reasons after coaches or GMs get canned. Being part of the Urban Meyer debacle as well as all types of nonsense happening in the front office and with that ownership group, kid could've been doomed from jump street. Definitely a no frills contract here with prove it status and a shot is good for both sides. In previous years, I feel we would've signed this guy for years at a high number and counted on him from day one.

Could be great value for the Panthers.

Chaisson was drafted by Doug Marrone's staff in 2020, the first COVID season. The current DL coach for the Panthers, Todd Wash, was his DC with the Jaguars then. That staff was fired at the end of the season for the Urban Meyer regime. Joe Cullen was the DC under Meyer, and Cullen hadn't been a defensive coordinator since 2004 for the University of Indiana (and never before in the NFL). Since then, he played the last two seasons under Mike Caldwell. Caldwell had been a long time LB coach in the league for over a decade and his only two years as a DC were the previous two seasons. He's now the LB coach/Def Run game coordinator for the Raiders. If there's any team right now who's fanbase can empathize with coaching carousels impacting player development, it's the Panthers.

K'Lavon also missed nearly half of the 2022 season and has been playing a rotational role since coming into the league. The Jags had drafted Josh Hines-Allen @ #7 in 2019 and later Travon Walker @ #1 in 2022. The same season that Walker was taken, Chaisson tore his meniscus and went on IR just a few games into the season until week 14.

Now that he's (hopefully) fully healthy and has four NFL seasons under his belt, he'll push DJ Johnson (who is a year older with three years less of pro experience). Dane Brugler had Chaisson listed as the #2 EDGE prospect in 2020 between #1 ranked Chase Young and #3 ranked Yetur Gross-Matos (new Panthers' EDGE DJ Wonnum was ranked #17). His leadership skills were hyped and seemingly confirmed by the love he got from Jaguars teammates in the media. If he's still got his explosive, athletic skillset then he might bring a toolkit similar to (not the same as, I repeat, not the same as) Brian Burns. I can see that spot across from Clowney being an open competition between Wonnum, Chaisson, Johnson, and Barno.

While we all know that draft status means little about guaranteed performance, it seems to matter when it comes to second and third chances.  A seventh rounder, for example, would be cut and delivering pizzas long before an equal first rounder. Having said that,  the system (less so for his position, but who knows) matters.  The coaches matter.  His maturity matters. 

He will compete with Barno and Clowney for snaps.  Barno (6'6" 245) is big for the position and is coming off an ACL injury.  He could play SAM LB and might be better suited for that position--but with Wonnum, DJ Johnson, and Eku Leota over there, Barno's athleticism has forced him to the pass rushing specialist side.  Barno has no QB hits or sacks in his young career (he is 25).  Chaisson--unlike Barno, had 2 sacks in 2023.  He is 24 and was drafted in 2020.  I am not optimistic, but the ability is there.

Under these circumstances,  I do not see him being cut.  Barno's ACL should slow his development and Clowney is 31.  Clowney is up and down throughout his career, so you never know what you are going to get with him.  I also expect the Panthers to be watching the waiver wire, with the first opportunity to grab a pass rusher, but you know they don't get cut often.

Im hoping that at the end of the season we can say two things about the pass rush : 

 

1 - Clowney balled out

2 - We solidified our rotational pieces and now we just need the stud to take it over the top. 

 

Hopefully Chaisson can be that rotational piece where we can feel good having him on the roster for a decent price for the next few years.

The kid is truly athletic. 

Perhaps they can make something of him. 

He made 3 sacks for me in his debut game I played on madden.

At the end of the day we need athletic bodies who can try and blow past tackles on third down. Chaisson isn't a very good player but he can at least do that (I think)

Just please help the defense provide a consistent pass rush.
