Alex Brown will start visiting on Tuesday

Alex Brown has been out of work for only four days and there is already considerable interest in the veteran defensive end.

The reigning Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints are first up for Brown. A league source said Brown will visit the Saints on Tuesday and more trips could be in the works for him.

The Saints are seeking a defensive end after releasing former first-round draft pick Charles Grant. They were reported to be interested in James Hall and Leonard Little earlier in the offseason. Hall re-signed with the St. Louis Rams.

There is a sizeable group of 30-plus ends on the street, including another ex-Bear Adewale Ogunleye, but Brown could prove to be the most attractive of the bunch for his ability to rush the passer and play the run.

One of the questions Brown will have to answer for himself, and the Saints will have to answer, is whether or not he can play left end in Gregg Williams' defense. Veteran Will Smith occupies right end in New Orleans. Brown could also play in a rotation for the Saints and get opportunities on both sides.

The Carolina Panthers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers are also believed to have interest in Brown. The Bucs use the same defensive scheme and had hoped to sign Aaron Kampman in free agency. The Panthers are going to try to replace the richest new Bear, Julius Peppers, by committee and Brown could be a big part of that committee if he heads there.

It's been rumored that the Detroit Lions could also have interest in Brown, and the Tennessee Titans could also become a player for him. First, Brown will meet with the Saints. There are no restrictions against New Orleans signing him as a free agent because he was released by the Bears.

"I believe I can play four or five more years, I mean good years," Brown told the Tribune last week when the Bears officially released him. "Shoot, over the last four, five years I have been so close to having the magical number everyone looks for as far as sacks (10). As far as what I have been doing, I'm in my prime still."

sign him

Heavyweights, funny movie. Anything with Stiller usually is.

Either way with this I'm fine with it. If we do sign him DE becomes an almost non issue (at least on paper). If we don't it allows the younger guys to show what they have got and I do think our whole Dline has some potential.

Brown will be an every down workhorse who shows up every play for whichever team that signs him. He might not put up the flashy numbers like some DE's, but his presence is felt on every play that he's in. I wish him much success wherever he ends up.

I am all for signing him. Gives us quality depth where we don't have to panic about our ends. Sorry, but our current rotation is danger close to absolute disaster.

If either of the young guys gets hurt or doesn't produce, we're in worse shape than we were at DT the beginning of last year.

Alex Brown is productive and knows the Cover 2. Just what we need. If we could play him against a Philip Fulmer led team every week it'd really be a no brainer.

We used to call that guy "Mike Rucker".

I'm iffy on the idea honestly. There are more questions about DT than DE.

I don't get why so many of you are salivating for Brown. Getting him will stunt the growth of our young guns Johnson and Brown, and push Taylor to the 5th spot again when he has looked very good on pass downs, and has even held his own on run plays. We need help at DT more. But I think we have 3 solid guys there plus Irvin.

Anyway, Johnson and Brown have the potential to be stars. Let them prove that they aren't. For the record though I would like a 3rd DE but not Brown since he would want a starting spot plus he isn't really spectacular. It is kind of a chemistry thing.

Taylor played in a whopping 15 snaps at DE last season, so not sure what you are basing this on. Frankly I think it will be tough for him to make the roster this year.

Having Brayton and Brown would not 'hold Johnson and Brown back'. If they are good enough, they will play. They both got a good 400 snaps last year, so even if they are not 'starters' they will get more snaps than people think.

However, I just do not see us going for Brown unless he can be had for s similar value to Brayton. Signing him to a decent sized contract seems counter productive to what we have set out to do this off season. In addition, a big contract WILL dictate who plays the most next season, which would hold one of the young guys back. with other teams in the mix I just see no way we pull this off, unless the other teams do not actually make an offer.

I see Douglas being brought in at some point (think he is still a FA) to complete the 4 DEs. He will be dirt cheap and produces nearly as much as Brown.
