If traded to the Raiders, Donovan McNabb would have retired

A week ago, the Raiders were regarded as the favorites to land Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb. According to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports, however, McNabb intended to never play for the Raiders.

Per Cole, McNabb made it known to the Eagles through McNabb's associates that McNabb would retire if traded to Oakland.

"He has plenty of money," a source close to McNabb told Cole. "He's not doing anything he doesn't want to do."

While McNabb would have given up $11.2 million in 2010 compensation if he had retired, the Raiders would have not been able to collect money previously paid to McNabb, like the Bucs ultimately did with Jake Plummer several years ago. The signing bonus proration on McNabb's 2002 extension concluded in 2009, and his "financial apology" from last year did not include (as far as we can tell) a signing bonus, which is the only form of compensation that can be recovered if a player retires with years remaining on the proration.

Hell, I would retire if I were to be traded to the Raiders. That team ruins careers.

I remember when the Raiders were the team where players went to resurrect careers shortened by bad behavior, bad play or old age.

Now, it's the elephant's graveyard and even the young players are getting ruined there. It's sad to be silver and black here of lates.

Can't blame him, the Raiders used to be held in such high esteem, now they're just a laughing stock, and will remain that way until Davis is gone.

Any player of McNabb's caliber would be stupid to put themselves in that situation. Well played by Donovan.

Antoine Walker should take notes on the whole "having money" thing.

I keep saying it Al Davis has run that team into the ground. He needs to step down from his personnel duties and get a real GM.

this story is BS. who would turn down $11 million instead of playing football? even if he decided to come back (ie favre, brett) he wouldn't have interest from the time he spent off. ridiculous.
