Panthers interested in Jason Campbell

Jason Campbell >>>>>>>>>>>>>> Jake Delhomme, and that is all I am going to say about that...

Going by the numbers...not really :sosp:

I checked the averages for their starting years. Here they are side by side:

CMP-ATT-YDS-PCT-YPA-TD-INT-RAT

Campbell: 1002-1637, 2715, 61.2%, 6.6, 14-10, 81.2

Delhomme: 1580-2669, 2751, 59.2%, 7.2, 17-13, 84.9

Doesn't really qualify as ">>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>" even with Delhomme's awful 2009 season factored in.

Is he better now? Probably (depending on whether Delhomme can bounce back, which I doubt) but that doesn't have much relevance to us.

I'm just using that as an example of what being stuck with a guy for years will tend to make you believe about him, and how it can cloud your judgement upon other players at the position around the league...

I mean, for years, we rotted and set the bar on RB success to Anthony Johnson's level... Before and after him, we could never really get it right until we got Davis... albeit as temporary as it was...

Now, we have a situation where Jake has been the standard setter for so long, and I don't see how people can be so down on Campbell when they have seen Jake... Campbell is light years ahead of Delhomme on skill and maturity... Sure, he may not have the "shoot from the hip" fiery temperment that Delhomme could bring, but the kid has all the good tools you look for in a QB... Saying he "sucks" or making a mockery of him is nothing less than ignorant, and childish...

If you don't want him as a Panther, then that is cool... But to take swipes at his skill level, when he's obviously been good enough to have a career playing a game, is just lame...

I shouldn't expect as much from the folks who made "Kris Jenkins is fat and lazy" posts, or the ones who say Pep takes plays off... But being blinded by favoritism and uninformed opinion is something that has killed the Panthers since they came into the league...

Jason Campbell never had Steve Smith bailing him out 90% of the time, either...

Neither did Delhomme in 2004, one of his better statistical seasons. He has had Sanatana Moss though, and the Redskins have generally had a better O-Line than the Panthers up until the most recent seasons.

It's not "uninformed" to note the similarities between him and David Carr, right down to the same excuses.

For me, it comes down to what Campbell wants. If he's looking to start, we might not be the best team for him. If he's cool with competing with the possibility of starting down the road, but most likely being the backup, I say bring him in.

But no draft picks.

Fair, except that if we do draft a QB in the 3rd or 4th, that guy is way more likely to be looked at as "QB of the future" than any veteran backup we get. So I don't know if "starting down the road" would be realistic. Starting now definitely isn't.

I'm not saying he (Campbell) is the greatest QB ever to take the field, but he is a hell of a lot better, and more consistent at being better regardless of the changes around him, than Jake Delhomme will ever dream of being...

That could be said of half the available QB's. Campbell would most likely become an issue when Moore beats him out. I just don't think the Panthers will take the chance. Most likely we sign a Bulger or vet type QB to be the backup. They'll also bring in a few UDFA's to compete with him and Cantwell.

Nothing in his history makes me think Campbell would make waves, but I do think he's mistaken in believing coming here offers him an opportunity to start. He'd likely be disappointed.

Buffalo, with Gailey, is realistically his best bet for career resurrection.

Where has Campbell ever given any indication he would ever "become an issue?"

Sure, he may not like it if he loses the job, but damn, he still has a way better shot here than anyone else needing a QB...

Oakland - I'd want to stay the fug away from Al Davis, personally

Buffalo - What weapons do they have around him that are any better than the situation he'd be leaving in Washington

Cleveland - They already got Jake, and will likely draft someone else, name one offensive weapon they have besides Cribbs that scares you

Carolina - Best RBs in the league, one of the best WRs ever to play the game, an undrafted FA sitting at the starting spot at QB, a great offensive line, and a good, young, defense....

Yeah, if YOU had the option of which one of those teams you chose, which one would it be?

I agree I think Buffalo is the most likely landing spot. They would most likely be one of the few teams to offer any type of compensation. They are dreaming if they think he brings a 1st.

    • Film Room Playlist _ NFL Pro — Mozilla Firefox 2024-11-25 10-20-11.mp4 🎯🎯🎯 There were a couple of "fans" yesterday saying that this wasn't a helmet-to-helmet shot... 👀 Looks like based on where Moore was and where the play ended, he'd have gotten maybe just a yard or two more. Chuba was downed at the KC 16 and Moore was on his way back to the QB, so the offense got what they could for the most part. After reviewing the all-22, Bryce made the right call here. Tremble was the hot and KC sent both LBs. He gets it out with a clear pocket but it's quickly collapsing. If there was a little more time it looked like AT came free at the end but whether or not Bryce would've been upright still is another story. Smart move to get the completion and keep the field goal in play to stay alive. George Karlaftis is about to get himself a big ole hug and Bryce heaves it to where David Moore is going. Trent McDuffie slipped just a step or two before this shot, but we can see the clear DPI here as he's wrapped around David Moore before knocking him over as the ball gets there.
    • I’m taking a TE early day 3 Ian Thomas and Tremble are FA.  We should have no desire to bring them back.   There’s more than enough film of ball bouncing off their hands or facemask.
    • Daniel Jones sometimes would sling it for 300 or 400 yards.  That's my stance.  We know what Bryce is.  If you consistently play any QB at this level, they largely are going to end up w/ some good days/games.  last time Mahomes was at BOA, Teddy Bridgwater threw for 300+ yards and a couple TDs and the Matt Rhule Panthers almost took him down.  We know what Bryce is.  Now we got people predictably falling into a predictable trap.
