Lineman's 7 round Mock

Punisher

Recommended Posts

I'll do the draft with no trades but I would love for us to trade down and get another pick between 2-5 rounds.

Most important Needs

Returner *****

We have been revamping our special teams again. And we need one that can take it to the house.

WR *****

Right now our second best receiver is either Jarrett or Moore. We can solve two of our biggest needs with one pick. If the WR is also a returner.

DT ***

I think we have adequate starters and rotation that we can ignore this but we really want to upgrade

DE ***

Same as DT. I really like Taylor and Brown coming in for pass rush situations. But there is likely to be some tempting value in the 2nd and 3rd round even more so than for the DT.

CB ***

We need to prepare for the future of Marshall not being here in 2011 and have a 3rd corner already trained to step in immediately.

QB **

Moore and Cantwell or the only QB's on the roster. We will try to develop one with a late round pick or sign one after the draft.

S*

We need a fourth one, if he can bring it on special teams it would be a huge plus.

OK HERE WE GO!!

Round 2 48 overall. WR Brandon Lafell LSU

He would be the WR that gives biggest improvement for our run game since we is the best blocking WR available . Similar to Jarret in that he is a big receiver but hopefully he is more like Bowe. The reason I went with him is he is the only receiver that is left that I see who can immediately start at the WR 2 position. If we get him we would try to trade down a little to around pick 60. Houston and Price would also get a look at DT.

Round 3 78 overall CB Javier Arenas Alabama

I'm reaching a little again which isn't good, but here is the return man. He isn't fit to be a starting corner, but will do fine as a nickel. He needs to be protected over the top with a safety but that is our whole defense. Captain from everything we have been hearing will be able to move into the starting position when Marshall moves on.

Round 4 112 overall WR Jordan Shipley Texas

This is a tough one. Since he could be gone in the 3rd. This is one that I would be willing to trade up on. But CBSsports.com has him at 139 at the 16th best receiver, so according to them. I am reaching again. Meet your next slot receiver. He isn't fast but he is quick. He can run 10 yard routes just as fast as any of the other receivers and that is what he need. Good route runner and great hands. Taylor Price could get a look here but he has really shot up people's board so he would likely be gone.

Round 6 175 overall QB Zac Robinson Oklahoma St

A QB that needs development to develop. Athletic QB with an average arm. I would have preferred Edwards more but Robinson is one of my favorite late tier QB's. Could develop into a winner.

Round 6 202 overall Jeromy Miles S Massachusetts

More of a FS than SS. But he is fast 4.45 and amassed 100 tackles as a junior. He has been rising, so he may not be here. If he played another year and produced, he would be a higher pick.

Round 6 204 overall Kevin Bapsed DE Nevada

Nothing more than an undersized pass rushing specialist. He can not hold up against the run but is great at getting into the backfield.

Round 7 223 overall Chris Scott G Tennessee

Played LT most of time at Tennessee and will have to move inside because his feet aren't quick enough at the pro level. He will still be able to move outside in a pinch which is versatility that Carolina likes.

Round 7 249 overall Larry Hart Central Arkansas

Former DE moving to LB. We can try him at both positions. He is undersized for a DE, but like Bapsed he has good potential as a pass rush specialist.

My biggest problem with this draft is I didn't get a speed receiver to compliment the run game. It is up to Smith once again to handle the load. Hope he doesn't get injured. I'm sure others will have a problem with the lack of a high round DE, DT. I like all four of our guys at DE. If Brayton didn't return, I would have grabbed a higher DE. DT I am a little more worried but I do like Leonard and Johnson. Irvin IDK, but we did spend a third round pick on him so what is the point of another one. Tyler IDK either, but I don't want to push him out without seeing what he has.

LaFell has small hands and a problem with drops, and he sure as heck isn't a speedster.

If all the other WR's have been snatched up, then that means something else much juicier would have fallen to us as well.

Remember 2007 was the year we absolutely HAD to have a safety (and people were praying to the gods above that somehow Laron Landry would fall to us). LB and certainly C were not even close to positions of need. 3 years later Kalil and Beason have both been to a Pro Bowl and Skins fans spend every Monday in the Fall and Winter complaining about their crappy Safety.

Let's get a good WR if he's there, but let's sure as heck not pick somebody because "he is the only receiver that is left that I see who can immediately start at the WR 2 position."

I agree, i love Hurney's BPA strategy but to be fair Landry has been playing out of position. If Mike bring him back to SS i think he'll have a great season.

In any case, Beason and Kalil are beasts!

+1

THANK YOU. I've been saying that for the longest time, but for some reason, people make the same mistakes every year. Remember guys, half the players picked in the draft turn out to be busts. You'll be doing well to grab a player that can actually succeed in the NFL. Get too married to positions and you'll just end up hurting yourself. Imo you should go BPA first and only look at positions when 2 or more candidates are of similar quality.

You make a good point about the situation if there's a WR run before our pick, but I don't think the Beason and Kalil picks are good examples at all. Those were both huge needs that year.
