Panthers interested in G Rob Sims?

ESPN's John Clayton came through with two crucial bits of information on Thursday afternoon. One, Seahawks guard Rob Sims was expected to sign his RFA tender on Thursday, speeding up the trade process. Two, not only are the Lions involved -- as we knew earlier in the week -- but the Bears are back in the mix, as are the Eagles.

On Wednesday Jason La Canfora tweeted the original rumor, that the Lions are "considering" a trade for the RFA. It's believed that Sims is not a match for Seahawks OL coach Alex Gibbs' zone-blocking scheme, and there were rumors last week that he would be shipped to the Chicago Bears in exchange for Alex Brown. It's also believed the Lions are trying to upgrade their interior line this offseason, so at least this one passes the "common sense" test.

On Friday, Sean Jensen of the Chicago Sun-Times reported that the Browns are also interested, and noted that if each team offers their fourth-rounder, the Lions have a big advantage given their relative standing in that round compared to the other teams. ESPN Insider Len Pasquarelli puts the Panthers in the mix as well. Sims is only 26, so he's under the de facto age threshold the Panthers have established this offseason.

I don't really see why we need another starting caliber guard??? Plus, don't we use some zone-blocking? I don't get it.

Hedging our bet that Bernadeau and/or Schwartz can give us starting caliber play for a full 16 game season would be my guess... but I can't see us giving up draft picks for him, we already have so few.
