Worst Offseason Ever?

BTW, I looked up the transactions for this offseason and last, and still, last offseason we only signed scrubs/"future contract" guys too, but we signed significantly more last year.

There was also a few that many of us already liked such as Decori Birmingham, Nehemiah Broughton, Jason Carter, etc.

This year... Dexter Jackson maybe?

Like I said, it's not the lack of signings, it's the lack of activity. Usually, when a guy like Alex Brown gets released, Gantt or somebody will at least say "the Panthers are/aren't interested."

Not even close. We didn't NEED to make a bunch of big moves this offseason.

The only thing that NEEDED to happen(in my opinion) was making sure Moore was the starter going into 2010. I would have liked to make a play for one of the big name receivers, but that's just not how the Panthers operate and I've grown to accept it. Something that would make this offseason absolutely perfect would be extending DWill, Kalil, Beason, and Davis.

Just take a moment and think about how well off the Panthers are compared to other teams. We have arguably one of the best offensive lines in the league, a top 10 receiver, 2 elite running backs, a secondary with experienced players that finished #4(#8 in total defense) in the league in pass defense/takeaways in 2009, a top 4-3 linebacker core, and almost all of those players are still young.

Yeah we need a WR, and possibly a DT. Those will be filled in the draft, not through free agency or trades. Relax and quit worrying.

You're right, but do you trust our ability to draft a productive WR? lol

If we pay TD, Beason, Williams, Stewart, our OL and other key young pieces when their time comes then I will consider this a very successful off season.

I don't think you'll see them sign both TD and Beason. Both are going to comand 5-6 year deals worth 40 million +. Add that to Williams making serious bank, plus Kalil and Stewart in a couple...No way they'll be able to drop the money on all of them and I don't see a team tying up close to 80 million in just two LB's in a 4-3 system.

If you listen to the front office then you would know their reasoning for the slow off season and cuts were to keep our core young players intact. This is why I am okay with the cuts and lack of signing this season. If we can't resign our playmakers then what is this all for?? These players should receive the benefit of peppers freed up money, and a lack of #1 draft pick this year.

Our LB core is what’s going to take our defense to the next level IMO... in our first Superbowl run it was our D-line, now I believe it will have to be our LB's. How are we going to be a dominate team if we can't keep our younger playmakers??

I'm waiting on the Draft to pass judgement.

So far, I can understand why they've done what they've done, except for three moves.

Na'il Diggs - The guy was productive, despite the age.

Brad Hoover - Not a good idea to cut the Fullback who's blocking helped set an NFL rushing record.

Rhys Llyod - He was arguably the brightest spot of a bad special team unit.

I was all gloom and doom with the inactivity on Free Agents. But after getting the compensatory picks in the draft, I'm a little more hopeful. We'll have to see what happens on April 22nd.

haha not really, but you never know. I think this year they'll be a lot more focused on WR, and this draft is really deep. I still have hope.

Didn't the Observer just do an article on how extending Kalil and DLo is somewhat hindered or prohibited by the looming lockout?

That's the thing. It's hard to get excited about it.

Like I said, I'm excited about our young guys finally getting their shot and I think guys like Moore, Anderson and Connor will all be good to great for years to come... That's obvious about DLo and TD...

But, we aren't even extending the guys we purged all the vets for. I know it doesn't happen overnight, but we aren't even hearing about impending deals with them.

It's not just Carolina... WR is not the easiest position to evaluate the transition and potential in the NFL... There are numerous examples of WR drafted by all teams who did not pan out. Some multiple WR's in the first round...Just look at ALL the Wr's drafted in the first few rounds of past draft...It's not just Carolina... it's the whole damn league... unless you have a player like Peyton Manning who can probably make me look half way decent catching a football.

Yeah a lot of it has to do with the QBs in place too. Look at Green Bay. You can go down the list of guys they've drafted at WR that have been solid/productive. Jennings, Nelson, etc. in recent years.

I know we're not the only team with bad WR draftees, but ours seem extra bad. But, at least we haven't had a guy like Michael Clayton who looked like the second coming of Michael Irvin as a rookie and then blew balls ever since. Our guys suck and they let us know it early on (I thought Colbert sucked from day one, so he doesn't count).

But, I do believe this years class is promising. Depending on the deal, I would love to get up a little higher and get Bryant or Tate.

Yea, with the 30 percent rule for guys in contract you won't see either Kalil, Beason or Williams extended this season. Might see TD get a contract from the team, but I doubt it. I just don't see them paying him 40 million and Beason 40 million at the same time. There's also a good chance that both Kalil and Williams will walk without the Panthers recieving compensation. Ran into a similar problem with Morgan and Witherspoon a few years ago... They did it once and it won't suprise me to see it happen again.

For TD to be staying as a panther, they'd offer him the Contract before this season...Not wait till next offseason..

Panthers have been in win now mode since 2003. Activity trying to plug holes was expected by testing out guys and being active. Carolina's only concern this upcomnig season is testing what is on there roster for the future when they are ready to commit to trying to win it. 2010 is basically an audition for when Carolina is serious. Plus, it gives all the youth valuable reps. They don't need to bring in a guy w/ 2 good years left or a older guy average guy to plug a hole. The only worthwhile FA for Carolina is a young kid who probably isn't ready to start for most teams.

    • Easily. To be able to plug in a backup LT without much drop off from your starter? That could mean the difference between playoffs or sitting at home in January. Good/serviceable smart young and healthy LTs that won’t lose you a ball game at reasonable $$ don’t just come along every day. Everyone talks about the most important positions on a football team… backup LT is in the top 10.  Picture next year… the team is scrappy and competitive, 4 and 3 record, second place in the South. Morale is good. devastating run game that Let’s our marginal defense get plenty of rest. We play the Bucs and win, going to 5 and 3, but we lose Ickey to a high ankle sprain. Atl loses that week and are now at 5 and 3 as well. There is no Ickey and no BC because we let him go… and we go in to Atl the next week for a battle of first in the south. Week after that is the Jets…. Now they lose both by 10 and 3, respectively, and fall to 5 and 5 going in to their bye week. Atl is at 7 and 3. Out of typical Panthers desperation, they try to rush Ickey back in to the lineup with a saints game coming up…  Back to good old Panthers football, always playing catchup. Another season at .500 and the fans sadly rejoice in mediocrity, when playoffs were in reach. This team always overestimates its ability to pick up quality o line depth in the draft or FA and it always blows up in their faces. Like Chuba, I see him as being part of the core that Dan is trying to build. Work on his contract now and see if we can come out with something mutually beneficial. I’d consider 3 yrs at $25m to be very fair.
    • it would be great to have "double trouble" again, I even had a T- shirt for Williams and Stewart and the double trouble logo, was a great time to be Panthers fan. We shall see...
    • Sounds like a plan. Those are the teams we should be mimicking! lol
