Just like some people perceive we're gonna change our name when anyone who knows this organization and understands how much harm it would do knows it aint gonna happen. But its a neat way for the Observer to get hits to their website from casual NBA fans.

and also like politics you have to compromise sometimes it just seems like the name changers don't want to even try to adopt the team

Well this is the fundamental point of disagreement.

I think a change in the team name would do more good, and you think it would do more harm.

Agree to disagree.

Either way, I am going to support the basketball team in Charlotte. :grouphug:

Most of it is people holding a grudge with Johnson for being our founder. They love the basketball team, they just hate the man most responsible for it.

Why do you think people hate Bob Johnson? Because he owned BET? I just don't get this argument.

Putting the games on a network no one could get that first year hurt the team a lot. Putting a team on the floor that never made the playoffs, even in a league where it's hard not to make the playoffs because you get first dibs on the top talent in the draft, clinched the deal. People were glad to see MJ, who brought Larry Brown to town, take over. And now they are looking at this silly ass name, Bobcats, and thinking a change might signal to the rest of the NBA that Charlotte is no longer a joke.

there are penty of silly nicknames for prof. sports teams let's see knickerbockers, thrashers, thunder to name a few but doesn't seem to bother most of their fans if the product is entertaining.BOB made alot of mistakes , the worst one in mind being hiring front office people with little knowledge of this market. they tried to present a product that didn't fit this city(prices, game presentation and such)but what people in this town need to get over and accept are that those things have improved and the cats really work hard to get people in the stands . what alot people on this board need to understand that a small but vocal group in this city will never support this team because they don't like the nba, it's image, and many have a problem with how the arena got built and some just don't like bob johnson. no need to concern ourselves with them but reasonable people who have interest in the product will start to come as the buzz continues to grow. we have a loyal 14,ooo to 15,000 base with many people starting to show interest. i doubt you will ever see anything close to the hornets in this city unless we have a championship caliber team

That's because those fans aren't trendy people waiting to hop on the bandwagon.

:D

exactly!! alot people in this town always like to be apart of the in thing to do, that's why people get so geeked up when places like ikea, crate&barrel etc open up in town. they will jump on bandwagon as the cats become more relevant, and if you have noticed the observer over last couple of weeks has run alot of stories on the cats and their players

Hey, if the team keeps Bobcats, I doubt it will make one season ticket holder decide not to re-up. I'm just saying if the majority of your fans say they want a different name....it's silly not to consider it. Fans identify with the name. I wrote a story once on the NFL names and how they came to be. You'd be amazed how many had local tie-ins. Bears was a more intimidating version of Cubs. Giants because of the huge buildings. Packers because of the local meat packing industry.

I'll never understand why owners don't do right by the fans and give them something they can get behind. Utah Jazz is just silly. Arizona Cardinals. Tennessee was the Oilers for one year before they got smart.

If the Bobcats want to join the list of teams that have senseless names, fine. But don't complain when your fans never approach the rabid levels of the Dallas Cowboys or the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Kind of like the Bobcat is a leaner, scrappier version of a Panther?

I always thought the Bears were named after hairy gay loggers.

One good way to piss off the core fanbase that has been there since day one is to make all this Bobcats merchandise we've purchased null and void.

If you're not a fan because of the name, go fist yourself then suck your fingers clean.
