[NFL] Hard Knocks: A Snippet from Brian Burns trade talks starting at the Senior Bowl

I'm just happy to get rid of him. It would have been nice to get more compensation, but once we turned down the Rams' offer, we were screwed on that front. We were destined to take an L. But, we were able to take a substantial amount of savings with his departure and ultimately prioritize the O-line while possibly improving the D-line despite Burns' departure. On one hand wasted opportunity was a hard pill to swallow, but the savings opened up different opportunities.

I know, but he didn’t have to come off two first rounders so fast.

I now see how they got him down to two 2nds.

Agree.  Even though we were desperate, it'd be nice to not obviously reek of desperation.  Make them think he is that expensive for a while anyways.  Maybe see if gms who aren't your old friends want to bid and drive the price up rather than immediately slashing the price.

I like that we used the cap space to improve the offense and like generally our draft strategy but I'm still hurt over the trades we've made.

What we got was marginally less than what I was expecting - feel like we could have squeezed a bit more out of them, but whatevs.  I mean, if we drew a hard line and said, nah, a 2nd and 4th, no less, I doubt the Giants are walking due to a difference between a 4th and 5th considering the asset received in Burns.

Heck, maybe it could have been a 2nd and 3rd.  But it's water under the bridge at this point.

    • “Consistent with our organizational policy on employee matters, we will have no further comment.” Makes it appear it could be a personal issue of some sort. He could even have a sick family member he wanted to move closer to, hindering him from his job. Who knows?? Again I don’t think this is anything groundbreaking despite some of the reactions on here.
    • this is interesting, it feels like if they were going to fire him they would have done it already but he was on blueprint looking excited about the draft. If i had to guess he did something non football related that got him fired.
    • Hey, don’t misread my statement. I was pretty clear that I wanted all the coaches and Fitterer’s staff gone. I only was saying that Wilson leaving is meaningless and all the OMG stuff is silly. No real up and coming stars came to Carolina so losing Wilson isn’t keeping us from doing better. Our future rests on what Canales can do with the young guys and at QB (improve Young or prove he’s not the guy) and what Morgan’s drafting will be. Also, in the past few years as the director/VP of scouting for the Cardinals, what did Wilson do to make him an up and comer? Scouting Murray and Isiah Simmons? Tre McBride in the 2nd looks like their best value draft pick in Wilson’s unbelievably amazing 4 years at the head of scouting for that juggernaut drafting Cardinals team. Again, we like to puff up people to make Tepper and co look worse. No need to make Wilson look better than he was to make the last 6 years look worse.
