His career would be over if it wasn’t for us. He said last year the panthers were the only team willing to make him a starter.

Tells you something about Frank and Fitt’s evaluation skills.

1000 yards.

Not bad for being washed up.

Not being a starter is not the end of a career. He played well so not sure what you are attempting to say here. It's almost like you are complimenting their evaluation skills

Theilen didn't crack the top 100 in terms of yards per catch.

Theilen didn't crack the top 100 in terms of yards after the catch

Theilen is washed.  Him being on the field so much limits us.  He should be situational.  Not a starter.  He wasn't actually a good thing for the O last year.   He just happened to be functional.   And Thielen himself I think admitted that only Carolina disagreed with that.

Yeah I’m hoping Mingo can take some snaps from him in the slot with DJ and XL on the outside. It gives AT rest and lets Mingo play his more natural position.

yeah, I always go back to Curtis Samuel.  We basically got 1 season of using him how he was always supposed to be used.

Johnson and Mingo on the outside.  Mingo in the slot.  Theilen situationally on 3rd down when you just need a catch to a marker.

Adam Theilen was such a Charlotte Bobcats kind of signing.  Overpaying someone clearly not worth it just because the roster is empty.

He is a really smart player and pretty good hands. How much YAC was there for him? And yeah I know he is athletically past his peak.

At the least, he served some kind of purpose last year that no one else was doing much of so I’m not worried a ton. If the QB needs him then you know, he will be there again, regardless.

I’d love if someone beat him out, that is raising our floor which is about the first thing that we need to do.

The HC and the OC too if i’m not mistaken went through being WR coaches as part of their OJT. So, helpful with evaluating. (I come back to it and see, we have a few guys to really look at).

He was tied for 10th in the nfl in receptions on this horrific offense with a horrific QB.  He was 15th in the nfl in targets.  He was 101 in yds/rec average.  That could be a combination of him slowing down and a QB who struggled with time to throw and inaccuracy.  This year will show more of which is more true, if the new WRs on the team light it up then it shows it was the team around bryce including theilen that was holding him back...or if bryce continues where he left off last year then it will show bryce was the one holding his team and coaches back last year.  We will all get to find out in a few months.

I really don't understand how you can argue Thielen was overpaid.  36th highest contract for a Wide Receiver and we got a thousand yards out of him in this offense?

Thielen isn't sexy but he pairs well with Bryce IMO.  There's a reason why Bryce fed Thielen in the passing game...cause he excels in the short-intermediate range where Bryce is most comfortable throwing (hopefully that changes), and he's the only true route runner we had.  Diontae Johnson on paper seems to be an upgraded version of Thielen who can excel in that role, but I'm not sure that relegates Thielen to the bench.  I think benching the one receiver Bryce has proven rapport with is risky.

Diontae to theilen comparsion is really a close comparison if you look at the stats each has put up.  Even the avg  for each has been around the same.  image.png.ddbdfc1caa0eaedf413f8b5a012c445e.pngimage.png.ad64438adb5982afc48301355fb484e4.png

If Johnson plays out there will be two trusted options. I’ll take that if the ball gets to them.

I don’t know what Legette can do relative to hopes to do. But he can do something.

TMJ and Mingo know some NFL reality early in their contracts. We’ll see how they respond. I’m real interested to get an idea of how they stack up the depth chart.

and there are more guys with a shot to be the last slot.

AT is tough because he has definitely lost a step at this point in his career and should never be the top option in an offense like he was for us due to lack of options last year.  He is a good veteran leader and has reliable hands, but I wouldn't think he should be more than option 3 or a nice 3rd down WR who is reliable.  If Mingo or XL show good progress this year, I'd bet we opt out of his 3rd year or trade him away to a contender.  Mingo really fits in best at his slot position and I hope he gets plenty of looks there which could help an older AT stay rested/healthy.
