REPORT: RB Jonathon Brooks (knee) may not be ready for the start of training camp.

Recommended Posts

If you remember, we traded down in the 2nd round in order to get back next year's 2nd round pick that we lost in the Bryce trade. We were still able to snag the best RB in the draft (albeit injured). If he can return to form mid-season and then give us 3 good years after that, it would have been all worth the initial sacrifice.

Some of you are knee jerking on the immediate issue, but fail to look at the long game.

The more things change the more they stay the same. You have to be balanced. You have to be able to run to be balanced. It is that simple. Who would disagree?

First, I am consistently against 1st round RBs and favor the 3rd or later, but again, this is small stuff in the big picture (compared to the sunk costs of Super Bryce) and we don’t know if they are right or wrong at this point.

A large part of the focus is helping this quarterback... and boy y'all want to talk overdrafting and overpaying? This is miniscule compared to that.

These coaches are under a lot of pressure to make the team work WITH THIS QB. WTF would you do? I think if you get it and want to keep your job all season, you have to take that running game very seriously.

The only way he should have gone in the 1st is because it was such a weak RB class and not because he woukd have been such a great 1st round pick. Game changing 3 down back?

I disagree. No one is going out of their way to draft an RB in the first round unless they are a first round talent. There have been multiple drafts where no back was taken at all in the first round. Teams don't draft an RB in the first round because they're hard up for a an RB, weak class or not, they draft RBs in the first round because they believe that the RB is a game-changing back who generally can play all three downs if necessary without a second thought.

Now you can argue that Brooks is not that guy, but many believe that he is. Before he suffered the injury, he was on a first round trajectory, and that's nowhere near a hot take.

Disagree all you want. It was absolutely a luxury pick, as explained, and if those people can't see that then they have much bigger issues rolling there way when the season starts.

This team has been over drafting these kinds of players since Dave showed up and this crew is no exception. Young, Mingo, Johnson and Zavala were all over drafted (factually in hindsight) and this crop looks to be carrying on that tradition. The fact this GM was the assistant and worked very closely with the last makes it a dotted line of logic. We will find out soon but it's so obvious it hurts.

Drafting a hurt RB in the second round is the epitome of a luxury pick.

Not really. You're just making assumptions, but I get it. Until there is some actual improvement, lots of Panthers fans are going to be negative about everything, and all moves will be wrong...until they aren't.

Or you are making assumptions that something meaningful has changed? The criticism was earned and with how they drafted there is likely more lined up.

I don't think it was a luxury pick. Chuba and Sanders are not really starter material and won't be the future here. Sanders would have been cut if not for the contract (and will get cut after this season) and Chuba is in a contract year. Even if we keep Chuba, he is more of a #2 back.

None of them look like starting material to me this year, certainly not rookie coming off an injury and needing work. Also Morgan was the pro-personnel guy when they signed Sanders so it's reasonable to doubt that his salary is the only reason he is still around with a June 6th designation they could have used to open up cap (2 miil +) for another RB. Chuba being a #2 or on a contract year isn't really an issue until next year when they see how he does this year and what he wants moving forward.

These guys should be making moves to keep their jobs next year, not another future fest that's been going on since Rhule got here with his 7 year plan. It was a luxury and I'll just refer to the many post above to not repeat myself.
