How the Carolina Panthers found themselves in the worst situation

"Local scum bag" Assume you're referring to Navarro? Not sure how he's a scumbag (other than existing as a billionaire)... I won't claim to know how he would be as an owner but he was a wayyyy better option at the time than Tepper. Actually committed to the Carolinas (just tried and unfortunately failed to get a huge tennis tournament moved to Charlotte from Cincinnati), a legit sports guy whose dad was a longtime cfb coach, and his kids are all athletes. No brainer over Tepper for the success of the team, but the NFL obviously was going to pick the dude with insane amount of $ who sucks and will give all the other owner's teams automatic wins every year. And JR was letting the NFL run the sale for the league to save face -- he was always shield>panthers guy

Navarro was going to have to borrow most of the money to buy the team. Operating capital would probably have been an issue for him.

Remember, when teams write big contracts, the entire guaranteed sum of that contract has to go into an escrow account.

Ben also made all of his money operating a debt collections business.

During Covid, his company filed more debt collection lawsuits than anyone else.

Not the look the NFL wants.

He would have been in the exact same situation with us, with even worse coaching.

His Athleticism is off the charts, his QB skillset is not great. Dude can't read a field for crap.

As bad as Bryce was last year, he still threw for more yards than Fields ever has in a season, and has thrown for as many 300 yard games (1) in one year as fields has in 3... which took until year 3 to do btw.

As bad as you think Bryce is as a QB, Fields is even worse.

He's got the same problem as Sam Darnold.  He's more athletic than Darnold, but neither of them can consistently make the right decisions with the ball.  He's consistently made mistakes late in games that ended up being the difference in a win and a loss.

The irony with Fields is that his athleticism is what kept the bears in so many games, he would revert to backyard football and scramble and run and make big plays to keep them competitive, but at the end of the game when the bears absolutely had to throw the ball for a win, his limitations as a passer would be exploited. He has some of the worst end of half/end of game stats of any QB in the league because he isn't a good passer.

Darnold is never going to figure it out, and Wilks ceiling is .500 level coach with maybe a shot at a wild card one and done every year. Neither were the answer.

Didn't think there'd still be Darnold truthers in 2024 but here we are.

I will never understand how we have a portion of our fanbase to hate Cam but also a portion that loves Sam Darnold.

There is no better logic test on the planet than that. If you fail it, football is not for you.

It doesn’t have to be about Darnold vs all time good QBs it is about probably better level of play - for so fuging much less expenditure - in 2023 and maybe 2024 while the team gets built and with more assets in house due to not squandering them to move up.

I mean damn we were 2-15, how much worse do you think we would have finished? I was always against that trade up, always will be probably. They don’t trade the pick when a bona fide generational prospect is there. I mean, they had Fields, and stood pat with that over Bryce. And CJ lol. But at least they got paid to pass.

Plus, all that stuff around his dad being a coach and his kids being athletes...he would have been a different kind of bad from Tepper. Tepper is making bad decisions because he sees every business like a hammer sees every nail. Navarro would have been micromanaging decisions just like Tepper and would have fallen back on his dad being a coach, etc.

Look this is getting ridiculously speculative.

I posted something about this because I had never heard it and it was interesting;  an article concerning John Lynch and I think it was about him. A part of it was him basically saying Navarro wanted to hire him to help get the team together if he won his bid.

I can’t find it with a quick search online but I posted about it here and not that long ago maybe two or three months. Somebody probably remembers it.

This was before Lynch was hired in SF. I don’t think that makes Navarro sound bad at all. Maybe it wouldn’t have worked out, maybe it would.

OTOH, if Tepper had beern intelligent enough to identify Lynch, he probably would have found a way to phuck it up.

Racism. I know it's taboo to discuss, but yeah it, it's racism.

Are you guys trying to say that the Cam ‘haters’  exactly mirror the Darnold ‘lovers”? Same people?

I don’t think that is it at all. I think it is more likely to be different people, probably with some overlap.

This racism thing, when most of the team and league is Black and people are big fans of plenty of Black players, but have football issues with one or two and that makes them a racist? I don’t understand that at all.

I will tell you also, Sam Darnold at the price he would have cost, and all that cost invested in other areas plus we’d have DJ Moore, was a far better option than what they did.

You make a lot of leaps in logic with very few facts to back them up.

Wilks is a .500 level coach? He got one years in Arizona and a few months with the Panthers. He went .500 with half of a coaching staff and three quarterbacks, coming one quarter away and an Ickey collapse from making it to the playoffs. So if you say he’s a .500 coach based on that, I’d take Wilks all day long.

Darnold won’t figure it out? After one years with Shanahan and now with O’Connell, don’t at me after he throws for more than 4,000 yards and 30 touchdowns this season.

A lot of you thought Baker would be in the USFL last year after his season with the Panthers and he ended up in the NFC Divisional round.

tell me you know nothing without telling me you know nothing.

If they put Darnold in the same situation as they build for Young, and then add the pieces that are the difference in cost for the two and invest that back into the roster on top of what has been recently added?

Ain’t a soul but Bryce Young hims-elf changing my mind about that.

Replacement level qb and John Fox coaching is so aspirational right now I can barely envision it.

    • 5-12. Bryce Young- hoping for the best but prepared for the worst.  I think we could end up seeing a lot of Dalton this year.
    • Yeah, kinda how a few of us predicted every game would look like Alabama vs Texas where he was actually under NFL style pressure.
