Cherokee vote passes: NC's first recreational marijuana market likely in '60-75 days'

The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians Tribal Council has voted to amend Tribal Code to allow the sale of recreational marijuana, opening the door for North Carolina's first recreational marijuana dispensary to open on the Qualla Boundary by the end of the summer, despite the drug being illegal in the state.

During a June 6 EBCI Tribal Council session, the Tribal Council approved Ordinance 63, revising Chapter 17 of the Cherokee Code to change language from just allowing medical marijuana sales to allowing recreational cannabis sales. The ordinance was passed in an 8-2 vote, with Tribal Council member Dike Sneed and council Vice Chairman David Wolfe voting against.

The timeline sets the opening of North Carolina's first recreational cannabis market for August.

Cops will be lined up at the edge of the Res like Kansans St Patrol at the Colorado state line.

Yep, remember those days well living in CO at the time.

I would not recommend heading to Cherokee planning to stock up. Wouldn't be surprising to see checkpoints with dogs. Such a tremendous use of resources.

So a person can go buy this stuff legally on the reservation, but can be arrested upon leaving the reservation after legally buying the cannabis?

100%

One of the local county DAs has already been very local about how they plan to prosecute to the fullest extent of the law.

There's a lot fuged up with our legal system. They're still arresting people for a plant that no one has ever OD'd from while carrying around Narcan. Figure that one out.

Reefer madness! It makes the colored man look at white women and makes Mexicans very insane and violent, this is why its illegal.

fuging Clowns. If Big Pharm could sell it in capsule form it would have been legal long ago.

It's illegal because of the paper industry. It's remained illegal because of big tobacco then later big pharma. Underlying racism was just part of the sales pitch.

I'm honestly surprised that big tobacco hasn't shifted to lobbying hard FOR marijuana legalization. Tobacco use is declining. They need a new cash cow.

I remember being told years ago that they had their factories all setup for marijuana if it was ever legalized. Don't know if it's true or not though. As for lobbying, they probably don't because they're so far out of favor with the government and have been content with their other cash cows.

Why the fug you leave CO for NC?

My dream destination in somewhere in CO. Mountain views and nature. Seems like the perfect place to retire and live your life in peace.

Asheville is probably the closest thing I can get to it in NC.

Cost of living, crippling traffic, total culture change (everything just started to feel forced and fake), having a kid and all our family being on the other side of the country. Basically we were ready to tap out after 14 years and the equity we had in our home was just too much to pass up when COVID hit. Who knew if things were gonna keep skyrocketing or totally tank? Couldn't risk it. Time to go.

Honestly, I despise Asheville. It's hillbilly Boulder. The entire vibe is just so forced and fake. If I want to remember why I left Colorado all I have to do is drive 45 minutes to Asheville to see the wish.com version.

They can sell it in capsule form.  Capsule or pill form of it was around back in the 80's. It was called t-tabs.   Its illegal due to the odd vagaries of history.  If the ancient Romans had used pot instead of beer/ale, pot would be legal and beer would be sold on the black market.
