Where does Moton rate among the all time CAR o-line players?

Recommended Posts

I tend to think that Moton gets under rated because he has played on some bad teams, yet he is undeniable reliable and a top RT in the league. Where does he fit on the top all time o-line players when comparing him to guys like Ryan Kalil, Gross, Jeff Mitchell, Wahle, Turner, Norwell, Wharton, etc.?

I personally think he would be #2 behind Gross. At 29 years old, if he plays a few more years at this level he could be the best we ever had.

No question, other than gross and Kalil he’s right there with the best linemen  we have ever had, and he is very dependable with not only play, but his ability to stay on the field (knock on wood). We will certainly miss him when he is gone, and I would love to give him a small extension on his current contract, although I don’t know if it is reasonable being that we just signed out guards to mega contracts. As much as we have struggled with tackles throughout our franchise history, you would think he would get move love than he does.

He hasn't been perfect. Some people have been hard on him in recent times due to all the turmoil along the OL. But he's firmly within the top 5 no doubt. And he's done that playing beside some turnstiles for awhile now. As much as we all love Gross and Kalil they had the benefit of playing beside capable linemen for the most part in their best years.

Personally, Wharton is my most underrated OL of all time here.

Travelle Wharton does indeed deserve more recognition. He was rock solid.

You know it might be so long ago but I remember Brockermeyer and Matt Campbell being solid in the 90s.

I think a lot of people forget just how solid Jeff Mitchell, Kevin Donnalley, and Todd Stuessie were. In 2003 the OL only allowed like 25 sacks for the whole year.

Wharton was severely underrated and Whale was good for a bit.

Moton is probably Top 5, but I'm not so sure how much of that is because everything around him has been horrible so it's made him look significantly better. I really wish we would have moved him to LT back when.

I'd argue he's top 3 behind only Kalil and Gross. Turner was good, but he played on our best team ever and next to Kalil who made his life easier. The team's success made him look better than he was, which isn't bad, just not absolutely amazing. Moton has been a rock over the worst stretch our franchise has ever seen. If he were on the Cowboys, Chiefs, or 49ers he'd be getting pro bowl nods and accolades every single year. He's arguably the most underrated O-Lineman in the league.

I'd say Wharton and Turner were roughly on the same level, just Turner saw more individual success as a result of the team's (and Cam specifically) success.

i'm a big Moton fan. Wish we could extend him 1 more year and help ease the cap. I can't imagine him regressing much the next 2 years.

I mean at 29 he could play at a high level for another 4+ years.

Tough to ignore Turner's 5 straight bowl seasons though.  2 of those 5 featured Paradis and Larsen at C.  And multiple seasons with Daryl Wiliams at RT beside him.

More I think about it, in my ranking I'd probably make Moton a push with Turner.  Drop my boy Wharton down to 5.

Kalil, Gross, Turner/Moton, Wharton.

    • Yes, we have improved in the off season. So has virtually every other team. I see us winning 4 games, maybe 5 if everything bounces our way.

    • Yup, 6 wins is about where I'm at.  I think we hit the Matt Rhule 5 win mark, but struggle to get the sixth one.  We beat some bad teams teams like Washington, Cardinals and Denver.  We won't go winless in the division, so maybe 2 home wins in the NFCS.  The Bears aren't bad, but have a rookie QB, so if he has a bad day there's possibly another win.  I can see us catching either the Giants, Raiders or Chargers on a bad day for one more win, potentially two. If thins go a about as good as I can see them going, there's a possible 9 wins on the schedule.  That said, we have a black cat as our mascot, so temper those expectations by a few games and you get the 5 or 6 wins I'm expecting. I think we are winless on the road within the division.  We are not beating the Eagles, Cowboys, Chiefs, or Bengals.  We drop at least one more road game against the either the Raiders, Broncos or Bears.  That's how I arrived at he 9 win at best total.
