Will the Panthers be better than most are expecting?

Recommended Posts

If the oline and dline are strengths, then this team will surprise some folk. If they're both weak, like last year, they're in trouble.

Love the FAs brought in to ramp up both lines. Hate the draft didn't really address either. Just my opinion, but olinemen with upside is better than linebackers with upside. We've seen that the wheels fall off when that unit is bad.

That new engine and transmission don't mean jack if you're always sitting on 4 flat tires. But, tires aren't nearly as sexy.

The OL last year wasn’t bad on paper, but the injuries and Icky regressing sank it all.  And Bryce checking into runs with a 10 man box

Yeah, up front is really where it’s at for competing. That’s your floor really.

well yeah to certain extent but still it matters who you have also under center directing traffic & distributing the ball to your  offensive weapons or you will be just like the Cleveland Brown's were several years ago when they had arguably if not one of the best oL in the NFL with players like Joel Bitinio &  JC Trotter & Joe Thomas... just saying

Yeah the db's game plan, and the predictability of the run game/play action game in the middle still comes down to respecting the QB. We might see the benefit of a new scheme for a couple weeks but if BY is still playing the same style as last year it'll be the same thing all over again

Also if the qb is dropping back an extra 5 steps out of shotgun your tackles are kinda screwed because they can't guide the edge rusher past the pocket so the only option is to hold them at the line or try to slow down a bull rush for 3 seconds

Yeah you can’t play without a QB and other players.

I’m guilty. I look at being able to get a couple of yards when you have to, as one of the big tells. And feel extra good about the team when they have that kind of ability.

Getting that line of scrimmage to move forward, or on defense stopping them from that advance is such an important part of winning. I just hope Icky gets the lead out of his butt and the fog out of his brain. Too slow physically and mentally too last year. I know he can be better than that.

Makes sense but the interior OL was by far our weakest link. Bozeman played terrible and the OGs were playing like they didn’t belong in the league. Icky was up and down (normal sophomore slump) and Moton was solid as usual. I’m not as concerned about our tackles as we have BC and the GB guy as backups as well. Two big FA OGs should help but C is the red flag currently.

yeah, BY will probably keep dropping back deep out of habit/necessity, but if he can/is willing to step back into the pocket once the rushers come around he can be more successful. Dropping back that deep and then trying to scramble away from NFL edge rushers didn't work as well last year as it did in college

This is what people are failing to realize, you cant take a 3/5/7 step drop and make it a 6/10/14 step drop and still think the OL can create a pocket.

All you have to do is run around the tackles and wait for BY to fall/scramble into your open arms, the chances of him stepping up into the pocket are miniscule because he wont be able to see the field in there.

Yeah if he can't step into the pocket and throw the ball without jumping in the air it's gonna be more of the same. I think someone his height could technically do it, I just don't know if he can break the bad habits. I liked Doug Flutie as a feel good story but I wouldn't have done a massive trade up for him and that's where the frustration lies with most people

Preseason will let us know how well the team will do. I already said they would win 2 to 3 games more over last year. If they do that is a successful year. Any more is an outstanding year.

Things can change so quickly in the NFL. There’s been so many examples of teams being train wrecks one season then decent the next. I’m holding out hope we’ve finally got things right because why not.

We been down that road way too many times in our history.
