Underdog 2nd year QB preview

we mortgaged our future on a unique QB.....who we are just inserting into standard offenses he isn't going to fit.

That's a failure from the top down; Tepper, GM, scouts, and coaches. Hopefully, the new guy adjusts and creates an offense for Young. Otherwise, the Panthers will be picking another QB in the upcoming draft. They might also be looking for a new coach and GM again too.

Cam Newton and Jake Delhomme had the underdog card/vibe.

Eh, Newton had a lot of supporters and believers leading up to the draft. He also had just as many, if not more, haters. People were really split on him, but he was considered a top QB in that draft and a first round talent. That's not an underdog.

Delhomme was undrafted, played in NFL Europe, and had to work hard for his chance. He was a textbook underdog.

Very true. Young didn't live up to his hype for various reasons. Some were his and others were the team's. Hopefully, they get it right this time and he succeeds because that is truly what is best for the team.

I mean, they were very different.  But Newton had to go to Blinn and NC his way back into real college football.  Then basically 1 man showed a weak Auburn team to a Natty.  Cam Newton, then entered the NFL, IMO as the most scrutinized player QB in NFL history to date.   And had more negative/anti folks for what was a #1 overall QB than you see at that spot.   Maybe underdog is the wrong word for Cam.  Probably need to tie it into how he dealt with adversity and those wanting him to fail.   But Cam from the day he made himself eligible for the NFL.....Cam was essentially up against it all.  He almost has to embrace a loveable villain role or something.

Jake's as you said, is pretty textbook and Kurt Warner-ish.  The long road to the NFL starter spot.

Bryce was basically a Trevor, Clausen, textbook path. Golden boy status from day 1 of his football journey.

So yeah, maybe adversity is really the root of what I was trying to get at.  I like a QB that deals with the non-ideal stuff well and succeeds.

Nicely explained.

Also, considering your position on our young QB of 2012/2013, I don’t know if you’re the right one to call out the fanbase for anything; let alone it’s stubbornness or being quick to give up on a young QB.

Seriously? This dude was down on Cam?

The same dude that does mental gymnastics, like the full Olympics, to defend Bryce/Bruce whatever he chooses to call him on a post by post basis., fuging baffling.

You all do realize that if Bryce Young flops, the Panthers are bottom dwellers for the next 3+ seasons, right? This team will be in QB purgatory for the foreseeable future. They'll have to get lucky to get out. And the mascot is literally a black cat. Like who wants that?! I know ya'll keep saying you hope he figures it out, but...

Those "buts" are so much louder than the "hope he figures it outs." Like you really want this dude to fall on his face and flame out. Is that what we really want? So you can say you were right the whole time? Just so you know, it's really hard to come to this site and constantly read how bad this team and is gonna be - from its friggin fans! Fans are supposed to support a team. Not crap on its most important player at a very crucial point in his career. Being a fan means you don't have to be so damn "realistic". Cowboys fans think they're gonna win the Super Bowl every year, and they ain't even sniffed a Super Bowl appearance since the 90's. Some miserable mofos. Just miserable. I guess some people really do just want to watch the world burn.

Eh, you never know in the NFL.  Teams turn it around quickly all the time.  Look no further than the Texans.

I'm not saying we'll do it.  But you never know.  Hell maybe we end up with the No. 1 pick in 2025 again and fleece a team like how the Bears did us.

If the current QB isn't the answer you keep drafting one until you hit doesn't matter if it's one season two seasons three seasons or 5 seasons.

Some people just can't remove emotion from the equation.

It's about the team. The franchise.

That's why when you find that guy you basically give him the key to the city and any amount of money he wants when the time comes.

If that happened to be Bryce Young no one save for a few random trolls would be complaining. Because winning solves everything.

But reality and percentages are a thing. He faces a steep climb to become a good QB let alone elite for many years. People who cannot grapple with this are unable to remove that emotion mentioned above. It's that simple.

the talent and scheme didn't match his style of play.

but yeah, he was also a rookie that didn't make throws sometimes that were there.

2 things can be true.

Absolutely. NO ONE did anyone else any favors last year. No one. The only people I saw playing their asses off were Brown and honestly…Chuba.

disagree.

going into last year....some said Frank's O and the talented we added around Bryce didn't fit very well.  And that he would likely struggle as teams sat on our pass game with Bryce.   And that was basically how the entire season unfolded.   They didn't have the talent or scheme for Bryce to get the ball out quick....and the results were going to be bad for him without it.

It's not his fault given we drafted him...but Bryce not fitting what we wanted to do offensively, killed the O.

Mentioning that got you destroyed on the board last year.  That's still the case IMO.  Bryce Young is not the QB that you want running a Canales O.  But again, that won't be Bryce's fault.  This is all Tepper's creation and pairing of things.

We're just going to have to see what happens. I sure didn't like what I saw last season, but I remember seeing pretty much an entire team that stunk, sort of the whole pile of turds not just one shiny new one.

Let's hope things get better this year. Somehow.

I mean, I think the people would rejoice if we could reach the level of the interim Wilks/PJ/Sam Carolina Panthers this season.

It’s easy to say Young wont work out, most QBs don’t. Even top picks. It’ll be easy to say you were right if he fails. Much bolder to say he will be a starter with a better situation which is more important that Young himself.

For me , I don’t really care all that much. It’s be great if he does work out but believe it or not, this franchise has much larger issues.

Will this FO get its head out its ass? That’s a much more important question for this team moving forward imo…and in relation to the QB, whoever that may be, is very important.

id rather the Canales and Morgan work out than Young

But the thing with young not working out sets us back about 3 seasons.  4 if you count 2023.
