Hoover: Panthers in 'opportunity to fail'

I think there is a bit of sour grapes, but 33 is hardly old for fullbacks and Hoovs point that Fiammetta was not outplaying him is valid. The reason I feel...and this may be to Hoover's point, that the Panthers may be setting themselves up for failure is they did cut some very productive players for some unprovens in HOPE they step up. Fiammetta is one of them. I also lol at the notion Sutton will be a full time FB. He did well for spot duty, but that was only spot duty.

So we should tie up a roster spot for a guy who spent a large chunk of last year on the bench? By the way, he's not getting younger, and get used more than the average FB.

Unproven. You have the glass half empty camp and the glass half full camp. The rosey glasses people that say all the reserves thrown into fulltime starting rolls will succeed (so they hope) while the others are reserved and want to see some production from these guys first.

Fiammetta was a good college FB, but so was two other FBs that Hoover managed to beat out over the years the Panthers drafted. We'll see if that translates to the pros...

Smitty sat the entire '04 season with an injury, so we should have cut him in '05. I like the logic!

If you like logic you would have used it. How old was Smith compared to Hoover? A broken leg compared to lower backmuscle problems? How much abuse does a WR take compared to a FB in a run first style offense? Clearly, you don't like logic.

You don't know sarcasm either. Of course they wouldn't have cut Smitty, but missing a few games is hardly reason to cut someone, ESPECIALLY when they came back from the injury with no ill effects...that was my point. Once the spasms cleared up he was fine. The reason they lingered is because he kept trying to play with them. That's the reason the staff finally shut him down for a couple of games.

Clearly it wasn't missing a couple of games with back spasms that made the team cut Hoover, it was his age and salary...period. So don't make it sound as if Hoov was injury prone and the team ws cutting dead weight. NO sarcasm there.

Me thinks you assume a lot more than you know.

I know enough about sarcasm to know you're not very good at it.

At 33 he is starting to show signs of wear. In a year that they can take the FINANCIAL penalty for releasing said player, it makes the most sense. The team was cutting him before he became dead weight. That's call being proactive.

When he had one year left on his contract and could groom the guys still green around the ears...yup, dead weight.

Yeah, I had to question why a 5'10" 220 pound (roughly) RB started the games over our FB of the future.

edit: 5' 8" 213 pound RB...not FB

Fiammetta was hurt

does anyone pay attention or do we just like to randomly spout opinions as fact?

Look dude, it's obvious the team is on a youth movement and you can be a mouthpiece for the organization if you want, but some of the the cuts/no re-signs made sense... Hoover's did not. They are building for the future (also looking at a possible lockout) and cutting a vital cog in your staple running game for a couple of enigmas makes no logical sense no matter how you would like to sugar coat it.
