Is it even possible that someone can take Smith #1 spot

If we got Marshall for a 2nd, that would be a bigger steal than Moss to the Patriots.

He still wouldn't take Smitty's spot for at least 3-4 seasons, and even then only if Smitty allowed or was traded. He's just that kind of fighter.

Literally.

He might knock Marshall the f**k out if he even tries to take the #1 spot.

I actually think Smith can keep his ego in check. I think it actually would be good for Marshall to be a #2 and have the pressure taken off. Not to mention can you imagine the nightmares our O would give D coordinators with Smith/Marshall/Stewart/Dwill to gameplan for.

Whats great about Matt is I think it makes D's fear our passing game much more (no pun intended) then with Jake. With Marshall that fear would become a full blown nightmare.

i would throw that 2nd asap.and would give him the contract he wants

I think it depends entirely on that actually. If he would sign a deal in compasion to say Smiths (inflated for inflation) or even around it I would say we would do it. But if he wants to be the highest paid WR in the league with his issues I would say pass.

While I think that Marshall is a steal for a second round pick, you are wrong about him coming here.

Something Bleys, DaCityKats, and yourself are forgetting is that we are in a youth movement. We lost a lot of veteran leadership on this team. That in itself is not a bad thing because we have the talent in place.

However, on a team with a young QB and a lot of young leaders, it takes one guy to destroy them. A malcontent such as Marshall could potentially devestate our locker room. He would probably not be a problem but the issues that could arise if he chose to become one would be huge.

It would not be worth the risk of grabbing a Marshall if it could cost you a team in the long run. Don't even say SS would keep him in check because I think SS is more of a "I'll just kick your ass cause I'm tired of poo" kind of guy. He is not so much the mentoring, nurturing veteran that can set a wayward kid on the right path kind of guy.

That is why he will probably never wear Panther black and blue.

(I say probably because it is a hell of a deal and he is a hell of a player)

I think Smitty could play in a Ricky Proehl mode until he's 40+ if he wanted to. But he has another 3-4 years, disregarding the potential lockout, of being a #1 receiver on just about any team in the league. His swagger alone would demand it eventually, even he was brought in to be a #2 to Fitz or Brandon Marshall, it'd still be like having 2 #1's on the field for the next 3-4 years.

again, that puts him at 36....even better WRs than Smitty couldn't remain effective at that age playing as a legit #1. In the NFL, there simply is no use for 40 yr old WRs. If Smitty wants to play at that age, we can only hope the Panthers cut him and send him packing.

We have plenty of leaders.. this youth movement hasn't changed that in the least bit..

Panthers better buy that plane ticket for Marshall and not think 2wice about it..

We could have got Bolden for a 3rd. That would have gave Smith what he wanted.

would have been a better deal maybe.. with Marshall being much younger, a 2nd is fine with me though..

He legitimately wants someone else to be the number 1, but not just a deep threat. He said specifically that he wants someone who will draw more attention running something simple like an out route. This would open up steve down field as a slot receiver.

He may not mean someone who actually better than him, but has the skills to allow him to be used differently. There are different roles for what people call 1,2, and 3 receivers although the distinction between 1 and 2 can evolve and sometimes be ambiguous depending on the team. He wants someone that can make the distinction between 1 and 2 on the Panthers less stark.

It would be awesome if this really happens. My hopes are depressingly low though.

I think that at this point it has to be pretty obvious that Marshall is toxic. There is more to him than the average fan knows.

You are telling me that the Jets, Dolphins, Jaguars, Bucaneers, Bears, Panthers and Raiders aren't all desperate for some WR help? Yet, none of them has so much as made a move to secure him. As good as Marshall is, any team in the league should probably be after his services. The chance to secure one of the top WR in the league at 26 never happens.

That leaves two options. He is either a really bad apple or everyone knows that Denver will release him (don't think that is going to happen). If they are waiting on him to be released that makes sense on why no one is jumping on him. If he is truely that bad of a guy then I wouldn't want him on this team.

I think McDaniels came in and Cutler and Marshall (along with others I'm sure) weren't happy about it. Whether it was that they thought Scot was let go unfairly or that they just didn't like him something happened that blew up into were (at the time) a superstar QB was traded and a superstar WR was on the trading block.

I really don't think he is bad as he is made out to be. Everyone though Moss was washed up and he blew up on an excellent offense and he has kept his ego and attitude in check. Maybe Marshall in a new setting away from McDaniels can turn him around.

lol at it being impossible for someone to come in and take the #1 WR spot from smith. as unlikely as it is remember how unlikely it was that smith would ever be a #1 himself.

where was he drafted and what was he drafted for? he wasn't supposed to amount to as much as he did. very well could be that the WR we draft in the 2nd or 3rd round could end up blowing him out of the water.

i hope he does.

anyone think that mckid running things in denver could have made the marshall situation worse than it actually was?

when shanny was there things were under control with cutler and marshall. both ahd issues but neiter was considered a malcontent. you get some punk kid prick in there still popping zits using his new job to show he has bigger balls than anyone on the team and you have a recipe for disaster.

you put marshall in a situation with better leadership rather than the pissing contest in denver and you will have a better marshall. he'll be a punk but he won't be as destructive. he'll be contained like he was when shanny was there.
