Is it even possible that someone can take Smith #1 spot

As we all heard, Smith wants to be the #2 guy so he can fade out gracefully but is it even possible for someone to come out the draft and be more productive than Smith even in his 30s? I know that smith will still probably have the most receptions even if he is not considered the #1 and is able to play more slot but the fact is the deep threat is not a threat unless they make some plays at least once a game.

Considering Smith is a top 10 receiver, it'll be years until we can get someone who can truly 'replace' him.

I think he just wants someone who can be the deep threat instead of him(or the deep threat WITH him.) Moose and Jarrett are slow as hell, and are just possession receivers.

I don't SS is saying that he wants to fade out gracefully in the years to come. I think, like KP does, that he wants someone to take the pressure off of him.

Even with Moose these last few years, teams were able to cover him straight up. There was not a lot of need to shade a safety to his side of the field. Or to even commit a LB to anything he might run underneath. SS just wants someone that is going to require that a D gameplans for.

I also think that there may be some shades of self-intrest in SS getting the ball more here. Right now with only SS as our only real threat at WR it gives and has given Fox more of a reason to play ball control O. If we had another #1 or at least another real threat WR, Fox might be more inclined to sling it around the field some. Since SS is always open who do you think that would benefit?

years? Look we all know Smith is great....but Carolina should be able to find a better WR than a 33 year old Smith. That version of Smith would be what would be here after the lockout. Now, Smith could still be a badass but there is no real reason imo to believe that guy will be a top 10 WR.

As much as I talk poo about Smitty round here, we will never replace him.

I'll reiterate that for emphasis with caps.

WE WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO REPLACE SMITTY.

He'll have to decide when its time for him to take a step back. If he wants it, he's still got 4 good years left, and 10 years in the league. For someone to come in and take his #1 spot...that won't happen until he wants it to, or he's traded. Beyond that, we may never have another receiver of his caliber. How long has it taken Minnesota to replace Moss?

Didn't Denver say they'd take a second for Marshall?

Doubt the Panthers would trade for him, especially with the baggage he brings. That + he has to sign a contract extension or he is a FA next year. They won't take the risk.

Marshall seemed to show he can put everything behind him and go to work... I don't think he is as big of a risk as many people do.

We need a WR and if we can get Marshall for a 2nd, that's almost as good as the deal the Pat's got for Moss (or as close as it comes for an elite receiver)..

QB is one issue, but when you have receivers becoming free on the market such as Bolden and Marshall and your need is a top receiver and you can get one of them for only a 2nd? pull the fuggin trigger..

now isn't the time for us to throw our nose up in the air over every little issue.. make the decision, and go get the guy.. you won't find anyone better for years..

if the lockout occurs...his 4th year means he will be 36. if the lockout occurs his 10th year he will be 42. Smitty even has said he thought he has maybe 3-4 more years in his tank. 33-35 age range is a question mark even if he stays injury free. Smith is a bad man....but he ain't a QB and he ain't gonna be a #1 threat able to carry a team as he approaches his mid 30s. He knows that......that is why he doesn't want to be in that position.

Smith's production can be replaced. A Smith clone.....definately not.

I think Smitty could play in a Ricky Proehl mode until he's 40+ if he wanted to. But he has another 3-4 years, disregarding the potential lockout, of being a #1 receiver on just about any team in the league. His swagger alone would demand it eventually, even he was brought in to be a #2 to Fitz or Brandon Marshall, it'd still be like having 2 #1's on the field for the next 3-4 years.

Amen. Been saying we should make a move for Marshall all offseason. If you can get him for a 2nd truly then the Panthers would be idiots not to do it. What reciever in this years draft even has the potential to be what he has already shown he can do in this level.

D. Thomas is a Marshall clone and many project him to go late 1st and he hasn't proven anything. I don't understand the problem really. A lot of character problem guys go 1st round without haven proven anything. And they would most likely not contribute much until at least next year.

This is a guy that made Orton and Cutler look good. Thats enough to want him right there. Just watch this and tell me it isn't worth the 48th pick (maybe a 3rd from next year thrown in to seal it).

I think Marshall takes us from an 8-8 to a playoff team.

Personally I think Smith will be effective until he's out of the league. He may not be #1 capable down the road and he may not have the speed he once did but he will still be quick and he will always be scrappy Steve Smith, that's part of what makes him good.

Steve Smith a unique player, there's no WR like him in the league. Except maybe D. Jackson. Can't replace him.

If we got Marshall for a 2nd, that would be a bigger steal than Moss to the Patriots.

He still wouldn't take Smitty's spot for at least 3-4 seasons, and even then only if Smitty allowed or was traded. He's just that kind of fighter.

Literally.

He might knock Marshall the fug out if he even tries to take the #1 spot.
