The Boston Bruins are continuing to garner more and more interest for their former Vezina Trophy-winning goaltender Linus Ullmark, giving them a chance to be picky about the return. That could exclude much of the league from acquiring the star netminder, with Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman sharing on The Jeff Marek Show that he doesn’t believe teams like the Vancouver Canucks or Montreal Canadiens have the assets to acquire Ullmark. Friedman added that the Carolina Hurricanes could be one of the few teams rich enough for the deal, especially if they involve forward Martin Necas.

Expect the Maple Leafs and Predators to be two of the top suitors for Hurricanes defenseman Brett Pesce if he hits the open market next month, The Fourth Period’s David Pagnotta reports.

I'd do the Boston deal in a second - Ulmark is ok with 50/50 work and if the Canes could unload Freddie to another team - does he have a no trade, or can he be moved?

Freddie has a modified NTC (15 team no-trade list).

Read that Carolina is looking for trades for Guenzels signing rights. Sounds like he is gone.

This team is going to fuging suck.  It’s why wads left. We had our shot and blew it.  We have the assets to keep Gutz but dumb ass ownership will keep us from getting there. Gutz for a mid round pick??  Man fug off DUMBdon

He’s asking for 10.5 AAV over 5-7 years. He’d be between 34-36 and making over 10m. There was no way once his asking price was out that he was staying.

I mean shoot they don’t want to pay Necas 7.5 or Pesce over 5AAV.

For Necas they are trying to get prospects for him and draft picks. Low AAV numbers.

if you add Jarvis, Skjei and turbo. Team has 10m in cap space to fill 6-7 spots.

Who is going to pay Guentzel 10.5 million dollars for 7 years? Looks like he's going after money instead of another cup, his choice and I don't blame management for not doing the deal. I just hope they have a decent plan in place to keep us as contenders.

Without Guentzel, the team has a better chance of being able to keep Jarvy long term, Noesen for another 2-3 years, Drury and Turbo maybe.

And I'm saying that because I think Jarvis will make us forget about Guentzel.

Jarvy will be that dude next year but we are signing that guy long term anyways. This team must bring Gutz back

Unless the Canes let about every UFA walk, there's no way. The money just isn't there.

Make the decision, keep Gunetzel and risk the long term success of the team, or let him go and continue to put a winning product on the ice.

If he wants an elite contract, well.....bye. There is no reason for us to break the bank and possibly have to deconstruct the roster that has led to our success.

This is going to be an incredibly nerve wracking offseason with a new GM and a LOT of important decisions to make.

I believe in the overall idea we have though. Continue to bet on and invest in young players and prospects. We have had a lot more Jarvis's, Aho's, etc and a lot less KK's.

Guentzel was a rental, and one could argue a long-shot rental. Yes, he added scoring and he made some game-winning plays along the way, but make no mistake- the Canes were going to the post season with or without him. We all knew re-signing him was going to be a challenge, so the best way to look at the 2023-2024 season with him is, "it was a nice first date, but I don't think it'll work out."

But, the advantage to knowing he won't be staying is the freedom to start working with the options they have (Jarvis, Noesen, Skjei/Pesce, Chatty, Turbo).
