Off-season Thread

Recommended Posts

Well boys. Rods playoff bust just showed up again. We traded for Gutz and Kuzy and it didn’t matter. It just flat out sucked. Our goalie became an issue again.  We have some major off-season questions.
1.  Is rod our guy?  Could we find anyone better?
2. Gutz and Jarvis.  Sign them. Would they want to play for a team that flames out every postseason?

3. Goalie. Again. Major issue. Koochie and Martin going forward. Cut Freddie

4. Burns, Staal, Martnook. These boys are getting old. How much do they have left?

5. Necas. I’d try to resign him to a new deal.

6. Skjei and Pesce. You get one but with how shitty the playoffs went you may get two.

7. Morrow and Nikishin.  How fast can they get up to speed?

8. Rod again. His system in the playoffs is trash unless perfection in net happens.

what a sad ending to a great year. Bad coaching decisions killed us. We got Gutz and set the world on fire with the JAG line but rods boy crush in Svech derailed the one.  Imagine the JAG line in the playoffs????  You blew it rod. You blew it again. This was our window. It’s gone.

1. No

2. Ideally both, but if not Jarvis has to be top priority

3. Make Pyotr The starter next year. Sign a cheap veteran backup.

4. Marty - absolutely. I feel like staal retires and I think we can let go of Burns

5. Agreed - let's see what his price is

6. I'd prioritize Brady over pesce (personally)

7. Not soon enough...

8. I wouldn't say his system is trash, but his refusal to make adjustments makes his system vulnerable to certain teams

I'm curious how the players would feel if Rod is let go. I would still take a chance with a new coach though - I think we have hit our peak with him

Let’s be real, Rod isn’t going anywhere and shouldn’t. It’s hard to win a Cup. Everything has to go right for it to happen. We had two destabilizing injuries that significantly impacted the way we play defense and the PK.

If Rod will detach himself from his assistants and stop being so loyal to veterans, we have a HOF coach.

Wow. Florida two years in a row heading to the ECF. Great goalie play in Bob and scoring.  We had a better team but were worse in goal.  We owned them in the regular season. Just shows what elite goalie play looks like.

bob vs Igor.  At what point does rod just roll with Koochie.  This is our future being fuged over by stubborn rod.

Fug the East. I don't like any of them and have been pulling for the Stars, who finally ended the Avs season last night.

This, despite the fact Dallas had the first OT game winner taken by the refs with a horrible call and review.

1. Yes, Rod is the guy. No, you can't find anyone a better fit for this organization. You let Rod walk, you'll see a lot of free agents walk as well.

2. Guentzel and Jarvis are both priorities. If Guentzel doesn't want to stay, Necas becomes a priority.

3. Freddie is under contract thru next season. Pyotr is still a season or 2 away and Martin was a stop-gap. Won't surprise me if Freddie and Pyotr alternate next season unless an exceptional goalie becomes available in free agency.

4. I have a feeling both Staal and Burns retire. Martinook was a bargain at $1.8M AAV and he'll get another 2-3 years at $2.5M AAV, I think.

5. Necas wants around $7.5M AAV and his production was down significantly this season. From 71 points in 22-23 to 53 this season. Canes will try to get as much as they can for him because they cannot keep him and Guentzel without serious cuts elsewhere.

6. Pesce is all but gone, making Skjei the top defender to keep.

7. Morrow will be up this coming season. Nikishin isn't available until 25-26, is he?

8. The top lines didn't perform as well as they should have. Look at the goal scorers against NY: Staal, Martinook, Kuznetsov, Noesen, Skjei, Burns, Orlov. The top lines scored in 2 games, but the bottom lines are who prevented the sweep.

Team is going to look mighty different and while I’d love to keep our guys. I’m going to go a different route and bring in a bunch of new guys.

I’ll break it down by line:

Guentzel - Aho - Jarvis (Bringing Guentzel back along with RFA Jarvis is a no brainer)

Svechnikov - Unger-Sorum - Toffoli (Throw FUS into the fire and give him two goal scorers in Svech and FA Toffoli to feed)

Teravainen - Kuznetsov - Noesen (Bring Turbo back on a discount and bring back our only net front in Noesen)

Martinook - Staal - Fast (Bring back Martinook and reunite the MAF line)

Extra: Lemieux (The perfect extra)

Slavin - Carrier (Burns is declining, bring in Alex Carrier who I’m a big fan of)

Byram - Burns (Ship Necas to Buffalo for Byram)

Orlov - Chatfield (Bringing back Chatfield is a no brainer)

Extra: Morrow (He’ll get his chance)

Kochetkov (It’s his time)

Andersen (Only a couple years left)

Martin (Most of his time will be in the AHL)

First Call-Up’s: Nadeau, Blake

Trade: Necas (He’ll be too expensive, trade him for a top 4 LD)

Trade: Kotkaniemi (Probably won’t get anything for him, just attach a pick to him and be done with it)

Walk: Pesce (Getting older, will be expensive, play will decline soon)

Walk: Skjei (This one hurts the most but we won’t be able to afford him)

Walk: Drury (Staal is still better than him at this point and they are redundant)

Walk: DeAngelo (Thank you for your service)

Walk: Raanta (Hopefully he retires)

Walk: Tieksola, Murray, Burke (Better AHL options out there)

Re-Sign: Comtois (Throw him in the AHL so we have a guy to protect our prospects)

Re-Sign: Suzuki (Good depth for our AHL team)

Re-Sign: Coghlan (Good AHL player)

Re-Sign: Mendel (Good AHL player)

Re-Sign: Smith (Good AHL player)

Personal opinion but I don’t think you’ll see Necas, Skjei, or Pesce with the Canes next year. All will get $7+M.

Necas as an RFA has a good amount of trade value so we should be able to get a top four defensemen for him.

And I want to see us go get Carrier in FA. He’s the perfect defenseman for the Canes.

Guentzel will get $9M and Jarvis will get $7M (unless they do a bridge) eating a large portion of our cap space. We simply can’t fill out the rest of the roster by giving any of Skjei, Pesce, or Necas $7M as well.

I agree with everything but Drury. Drury showed up big time. He is getting better each day. We will need him next year. Koochie is our guy. No doubt. For the canes to take the next steps, Koochie needs to be him.

I like Drury but I just don’t see where he fits. He was the only one I went back and forth on.

    • What I really learned here is that the Carolina Panthers aren't anywhere near as bad as I initially thought they were earlier this year.  We've got a young and growing offense with some promising parts. But it still needs some tweaks and improvements.  We really still could still use a dominant #1 WR. But Chubba,  Legette, Coker,  and J.Sanders have generally looked decent. Bryce took a big leap after the benching. We can score enough points to keep pace with 2x defending super bowl champions, so offense isn't a huge issue. Main thing that needs improvement is defense. We sorely need a CB 2, and a number of new players at Dline and LB.  We're not quite as bad at edge with Wonnum showing promise.  But we definitely need 1 or 2 more edges Clowney is old.  Run D is probably worse prevailing theme these past couple years. We really need a good young stud or two to pair with Derrick Brown and another LB to pair up with Trevin Wallace. If Morgan and Canales can focus on rebuilding the defense this off-season and possibly going out and getting a #1 WR. This team could easily be somewhere around 7-10 to 10-7 and flirting with playoffs in 1 or 2 seasons. Overall this game has made me feel alot more positive about the direction of the team.
    • With our picks we need pass rush, lb, Safety, a speedster yac wr, o line depth and I still want a mid round qb. We got 9 picks and 8 in the first 5 rounds. If they pull Off another solid draft we be cooking.
    • We had one passing touchdown against the Giants and one passing touchdown against the Chiefs today. Yes a good backup can replicate that. And that is why Andy Dalton in significantly less games has the same number of 30 point outings as Bryce Young. I am on board with you guys about wanting to be hopeful for the future. Today was a good performance to build on especially at home. But let's please keep things in perspective. BTW the Bucs who honestly aren't even that good blew the doors off the Giants today after we went to overtime against them with 17 points. Again. Perspective.
