Panthers Trash Can Kings

After the Brayton re-signing I started feeling more confident about our chances this season. No not because he brings that much to the table more that it gives me faith that this FO is not focused on solely that age number. But just on trimming the fat while leaving the muscle. I am still concerned about locker room integrity but I think in time that will resolve itself. Leaders will step up the team will move on.

For all those that are concerned because of our lack of movement I wanted to shed some light on the subject. I started thinking about it the other day, if you look back at our recent history we have been gold picking out of drafts or other teams trash. Last year we got Sutton (late preseason FA) and Captain in the 7th, not to mention some fine wheeling and dealing for 2 probable starters this year for late round picks.

In 08 we got Brayton and Vincent as FA and Schwartz and Bernadeau in the 7th (two of the favorites for the open RG position) and H. Taylor might be a big part of our 3rd down passing formation this year. In 07 we got a certain future star QB (I prefer to be optimistic on him) as a late preseason add and got a stud SS for a 5th round pick.

Luckily we are stack in rounds 6 and 7 this year and we have been golden there. I also think that after the draft you will see us go on a mini spending spree picking up some of the trash cut by teams to make room for draft picks and thats when will cash in. I think the broad fish net approach should be applied to WR, NT, and SLB (depending on whos available and who we draft).

We will also see another UDFA signing frenzy like we did last year and this class that is a good thing (a lot of talent is going to fall due to the depth of this class). Most likely this is where we will get a QB or 2 and some Oline depth.

All these things are good things. Our scouting dept sucks at top flight FA. Look back at when we have dipped our toes into the top or mid tier FA (Whale, Lucas, and K. Johnson). Any of those pan out?

Do what you do best, as I always say.

I always liked the idea drafting better than FA most of the time. Isn't this year's FA kind of slim? Could have something to do with the Panthers leaning on the draft a bit more. I still think the panthers might go to FA later.

Is it safe to say the Panthers truly are rebuilding and is this a sign of Fox staying or going?

I think considering how calm he is, I think Fox thinks he has a real chance of sticking. Either that or he has a good backup team. I would say JR has basically said I don't wan't to have to go with someone else but if you don't get results I'll find someone who can. It is a make or break year for him but I don't think JR really wants him to leave.

Wow. Rather than dispute your logic that "If they play for us, they must be the best", I'll just remind you of the one time we actually got a legitimate big name FA. We went to the Super Bowl, remember? He was a running back.

What? Where on earth did I say that? I said our FO does better picking through others trash then trying to find a big name FA.

And as far as Davis your right 1/4 hits aint bad -sarcasm- (something they have failed to repeat since 03).

Don't let the troll bother you.

Good post; most of those points have been mentioned but not really in one thread and not summed up as nicely.

well lucas wahle and meshawn were all pretty good for 1 or 2 years and played to their hype those years... then it all went down the drain. and yes when we signed stephen davis we got to the superbowl, but he was also only good for one or two years. also, our oline (although juicing) was pretty freakin good then... i mean nick goings was effective...
