I don't get this at all

Everybody is practically complaining that we need a #2 receiver to complement Steve Smith on the other side but yet everyone wants the Panthers to draft a WR with their 2nd round pick in the draft.

Here is what I don't get: Why is everyone counting on a rookie WR (which, by the way, normally takes atleast two years to develop) to immediately step in and be that #2?

People are so dead set that a WR will be selected with our 1st pick but guys, you need to realize that you are talking about John Fox and Marty Hurney here. Their philosophy is to select the BPA and that position may not be WR come their pick. I just want you folks to realize that if we draft something other then a WR or DE with our 1st (2nd round) pick to not be shocked. I realize that they are under pressure to succeed this year but honestly, a rookie receiver is not going to solve our issues at WR.

It isn't like a rookie cannot contribute their rookie year but I do think that many folks are counting way to much on a WR to be drafted with our 1st pick.

Just be careful what you ask for.

The BPA thing is abunch of b.s if that were the case then if c.j spiller fell to us then we'd draft him. The BPA is really for later round picks that are more of a crapshoot. Drafting a reciever with the 2nd pick is the only oprion we have left aside from trading for good # 2. I wouldnt be opposed to that but the panthers have built this team thru the draft and will more likely continue to do that. Also think of all of our trades up, they were'nt because the bpa fell, it was because they saw value in a player that fit a need for us. Hope this clarifies the matter a lil more for you

I'm SO tired of people blaming Jarrett's shortcomings on Jake. Jake had one horrible season. Not three. Hurney said it himself in his interview on WFNZ: it's up to him (Jarrett) if he starts.

That means one thing and one thing only, he has yet to earn the trust of the coaching staff and the QB (no trust means you WILL lock in on other targets). If he had come to practice prepared and ready to go...Jake would have felt more comfortable throwing his way and Davidson would've designed more plays going to DJ. That didn't happen. The kid just doesn't have it and may never find it.

The oppurtunities that jarrett has been givin he has capitalized on them, but obviously u haven't noticed that. Jake is to blame bc for the past 3 yrs (other thaan the '07 season that he was out due to injury) he has only focused on 1 receiver and that is smitty. Jarrett doesn't have to be a burner he can make the catch in traffic apparantly our FO doesn't notice that. And so what if his first TD came 3 yrs into his career, he'd have many more if we used him in the redzone. But that's not the style of football our organization plays when we get into the redzone we run the ball down the other teams throat. Jarrett won't be a highlight reel player for long TDs but when it comes to spectacular catches he's the man. That's all its gotta take for blind fans to notice a players ability is to see it on a highlight reel. And that's a damn shame.

Jake went out with Tommy John and we had a revolving door of David "Lemon" Carr, Vinnie Testeverde and Matt Moore. The next year our modus operandi was run, run, then run it some more. Jake had an average year till the playoffs when he flat out sucked. In 2009 Jake had a hangover from the Playoffs and continued to suck. So Jarrett has hardly had a fair shot with a decent consistent QB. Jarrett will likely step up as the number 2 but we still need to use that 2nd on the BEST WR/KR available. Jarrett would be better used as a possession receiver and a speedster draft pick CAN make an impact in his rookie year as a return guy and deep threat.

just to clarify I'm not on Jarret, but sounds like steve smith sounds like he is . He has more insight than anyone else on this board when it comes to that. Secondly if he or smitty gets injured then we need another reciever to be able to step in and help. W.R. is one of the best positions to draft in the 2nd round, especially this year if the mocks i've read are any indication. I like Damian Williams alot because he played in a pro style offense, is built right and can return kicks as well. I like Lafell second to him.

If you really want to base it off of needs then our weak point is at the QB position because all we have behind Moore is Hunter Cantwell, who has been on the practice squad up to the point where Jake "went down" and they had to elevate him. No McCown, No Feeley, and No Jake... Where is the depth?

One could argue that we have no depth at WR too, however, I am inclined to say that we atleast have a little depth there with Jarrett and Moore. Am I saying that they either of them will make an impact? Not at all but to me it seems to me it would be logical, from the team's standpoint, to take a position other then WR.

Ok the first 2 rounds you go based off of bpa thats of a need. in rounds later than that you dont expect any immediate contribution so at the point you take the Dan conor's. Kalil was a need when we drafted him. I did'nt say W.R was our only option but looks to be the mose likely.

And then finally. We could draft a QB, if one they really liked dropped to them, but logically speaking no qb we get with the 48th pick is going to be ready to back matt moore up nearly as well as the qb's who will be on the market as a F.A.

So as a rookie, Jarrett sucked with four different quarterbacks, is that what you're saying? He did manage to snag 6 of 285 team receptions that year. And in a year when Jake threw for over 3,100 yards, Jarrett got 10 out of 246 team receptions. And last year, all because of Jake, Jarrett caught 17 out of 264 team receptions. And Kasay can't kick touchbacks because of Jake, and it's Jake's fault that Foster had fumble-itis, and it's because of Jake that Peppers wanted to leave, and if it wasn't for Jake every free agent we ever signed would have gone to the pro-bowl. I get it now.
