6. Carolina Panthers

Shedeur Sanders, QB, Colorado

"Deion Sanders would never let his son go to the Panthers." This is the time of year when this stuff gets brought up. Yet, it seldom happens. Remember when Caleb Williams was going to avoid the Bears or not sign unless he got team ownership? I'll believe we'll get another Eli Manning situation the next time it actually happens. Instead, knowing there is no real safety net option in free agency, let's take a fresh swing at a young quarterback with Dave Canales. Shedeur Sanders is my early QB1 because of his arm talent and ability to thrive amongst the chaos in the pocket. I'm excited to see how he grows under NFL coaching.

From the Draft Network.  @CamWhoaaCam @CamWhoaaaCam

Shedeur will be the 1st QB off the board imo. I doubt he's there at #6.

Even if we get #1 I would probably trade back because Sanders wouldn't be happy coming here.

Some people won’t like this, but Trey Lance is a FA who will be cheap and is only 24. Maybe sign him as a project QB behind a vet/bridge QB and see what Canales can get out of him? Just throwing out another option and we can just go BPA in the draft

I was pretty big on him coming out but now he can never gain traction and is perpetually behind with reps and game experience.  And I also do not think Canalas is some magic voodoo qb whisperer like he was billed as all summer.  I think with Lance and his lack of playing both in college and pros its going to take a lot to get him just to a point where he can play in a game and be productive.  But if he is dirt cheap then why not, he has the physical traits for sure but mentally man I dont know if its ever going to work if Shannonhan couldnt fix him.

Yeah I don’t think DC is a QB guru, but I think he has a vision for his QBs and works well with them. I’m with you on Lance having the physical gifts. Yeah if Shanny traded him for pennies on a dollar that’s a huge red flag, but he was a very raw prospect that needed time.

Give me Zach Wilson but not opposed to Lance either

I think we end up with Drew Lock though

I keep thinking Geno Smith gets released and we pay for him.  We would still need a young guy developing under him though.

Yeah I mentioned Geno a lot this summer because I thought he will too but he’s been playing pretty well so if he keeps it up I’m thinking Seattle probably extends him and lowers his cap hit instead of releasing him but he is getting pretty old (turned 34 today)

I seriously doubt we can afford him without getting ourselves into trouble

There is no telling.  Extend Moton or backload contracts.  There are definitely ways around that.  I don't think some are a good idea, but there are possibilities.  DJ Wonnum's dead cap is only 625,000?  That is interesting too...

The age plus the cap hit makes me think they might release him.  If they miss the playoffs and have a higher pick I could see it happening.  Maybe they can package him plus a couple firsts for our pick depending on where we both land and draft their QB.  Then we can extend him.  Who knows?  There is still a lot of football left....

thats why we are in this position we are in, backloading deals etc.  We need to get out from motons deal as soon as humanly possible.  Its crazy as hell to me being this shitty and having a horrible cap situation.  If we do things right it looks like 2026 opens up quite a bit and we can maneuver then and I think the only dude that is going to need a big deal would be horn at that point

Yeah after looking over that for 2026 we could be in great shape after shedding some dudes including Bryce.   I really dont remember at the time if we thought the moton deal was good or bad but damn is close to 12% of our damn cap.

His contract looks like a team friendly as they can pretty much cut him with little dead cap and would be saving quite a bit.  But they will be without a qb.  Lots of football left for sure but taking on an expensive 35 year old qb would be very panthery.

Moton has been playing great and is our best OL in a solid group. Depending on the numbers an extension could be a win/win. I hate to let a talented OL walk for nothing.
I feel like the cap akways looks good 2 years out. Then we shuffle our roster and it looks rough in the immediate future.
