Round 1 Winners and Losers

depends on mayo I guess but I think Maye is incredible value at 3, he might be the best qb in this class

He has the highest ceiling but probably also the lowest floor of the top three guys. True boom or bust guy.

But it's better than the low ceiling and even lower floor guy they previously drafted.

I kind of think McCarthy ends up a little that way. Great measurables but just never really produced the way he should have, IMO.

Yeah that's true.  Gotta admit though, Minshew looked a lot less capable in IND than earlier in his career.  Think Aiden played for LV with more ease and had a bit better vision/could see more of the field.  Minshew is a real backyard style QB that can get locked on guys.

Rattler in the 3rd or later could be interesting for them. He has the arm talent and possible Raider attitude to go with it. Still needs a lot of work though…

the did alright group
Bears....got their QB and WR. so WIlliams will have DJ and Odunze to throw to. much better situation than Fields or Bryce had (two guys i'm sure he will be compared to in his rookie year).

Pats...got a pretty good QB.

Raiders...got Bowers at 13? ca-ching.

Vikings...got them a QB and an Edge to build around. not too bad.

Both Xaviers...Worthy in an absolute dream situation and Leggette with his home team.

Chiefs and Panthers....got a couple guys who will end up fitting a lot of needs for them.

the not so much group
Maye...good QB going to a sucky situation. could wind up like Stroud's situation or Young's.

falcons...word is the Cousin's camp is as perplexed as we all were. apparently he was told that they were going to look at drafting a young QB. also apparently that discussion didn't involve telling him they were going to draft someone in the first round. from the looks of it, i think they want to be the packers. it's one of those things that i don't think they thought all the way through. i hope it comes back to bite them.

the "well, i didn't see that coming"  move
49ers taking Pearsall.  i figured Leggette would be going earlier than a lot of people thought (mainly thanks to us), but i don't know anyone that was talking Pearsall in the first round. Not a bad choice at all, i just figured it would be McConkey they picked up.

I still don't like we traded up one spot. I keep hearing '5th year option' and don't care...that's for QB's and if they are good enough for 5th year friggin resign them anyway.

Bills are winners.  Beane nailed it. He didn't have anyone with a first round grade and stuck to his guns.

Chicago...of course its just me but WR with 2nd pick??  They got Allen and Moore and decide they need another?

Why do I still have this feeling that Washington got the best qb last night?  I will have to monitor that situation up there. I can't explain it it, it's just a gut feeling.  It could also be gas.

Let's put it this way - if the Falcons are planning ahead to get out of a contract that they just signed a month and a half ago, it probably wasn't a good plan. Especially if they did this thinking he was the missing piece to win a championship

Good plan?  That's not for me or you to decide.

If they believe he's the missing piece, great.  Maybe he even is.  If so, they'll know for sure by the end of 2025.  In fact, they probably will have won it by then if he was what they hope.  If they have, they can keep him for 2026 and cut him after THAT year for only 12 million dead while still having a couple years of Penix on a rookie deal.

Not every team gets a clear cut franchise QB.  Honestly, there are only 10 or 15 of those at any time in the league.  There's probably another 10 or so who can win with the right things around them.  Then there's another 10-12 teams who just don't have anything at all worth talking about.

If you can't have a true franchise guy, I'd rather be in that second group than in the last.  The Falcons have graduated to the second group with Cousins, and are hoping maybe to graduate to the first group with Penix.

Also, the Falcons could trade Cousins as well in a year or two.  What if they get a year or two as a mentor to Penix out of Cousins, and then trade him for a third round pick?

We have so much vitriol here for the Falcons that we want to paint them as buffoons.  They've had their moments for sure, but so have we.  This isn't one of those moments.  This is an astute pick.  You can never, EVER have too many starting QB's on your roster.

cousins has a no trade clause

Why sign Kirk if you knew you like Pennix?  Blank was supposedly furious last night

Drake Maye was definitely the big loser last night. Definitely walking into the worst situation of the rookie QBs.

Now here's a question that'll cook your noodle, is Maye's situation better than Bryce's last year?

I must be in the minority but I think drafting Penix was a good idea. Cousins tore his achilles last season, is he going to be the same QB? He's also old and a a total weirdo. Penix tore his ACL twice.

To me, competition at the most important position is a winning strategy. The Panthers don't seem to understand that though.

Would you have called it a good pick if they had chosen JJ McCarthy or Bo Nix? Penix has huge upside if he stays healthy. He has a cannon. They're still waiting to see if they lose draft picks too so this might have been a pick anticipating they won't have a 1st next year.

Blank? I’m not a fan of owners being overly involved in draft day decisions, that’s what you hire the GM for, but you should at least be involved enough to veto a decision like this if it is something you would be “furious” over. Also, they knew they were doing this before the draft. The first 7 picks played out pretty much exactly how everybody thought they would. This couldn’t have been a surprise. I don’t know if I’m buying that Blank didn’t know what was going on. Maybe just trying to play good guy with Cousins to keep him on board.

thats the thing, blank clearly is out of it and they made the pick without telling him.  Thats how its set up in atl.  Here not so much

if they knew they were taking a qb a month ago, why give cousins 100 million and make it virtually impossible to move off of him for 2 seasons?  Any qb taken there would be a bad choice but picking a 24 year old with a bad knee and bad shoulder just seems like an astronomically insane selection
