Magic Johnson vs Larry Bird

Really good documentary on HBO on demand right now on this rivalry. I did not realize they faced eachother in the NCAA final back in '79.

This show makes me like Bird even more. That guy never gave two shits about what anyone said about him and still doesn't.

Lots of really interesting stuff in that show, highly recommended.

A classic Bird story. Before the Converse shoot with Magic he was out at his court. After some small talk with producers Bird took a FLAT bball and threw it the length of the court...SWISH. They said he went running around like he just won the NBA Champ.

THAT...is Larry Bird.

Those were the days my friends and I made it a point to watch the games. Start to finish.

Use to love during the playoffs and the Finals getting the crew out in the backyard on our court we made of bricks. Even made it look like the Gahden. Classic battles well past 1am. Floodlights and hoops were the shizzle

I went to college (Indiana State University) with Larry! My buddy was roommates with Tom Crowder who was on the 1979 NCAA team!

That was a great time! Larry took ISU from a little po-dunk university and put us on the map!

Oh, by the way, Billy Packer sucks!!!!

    • Okay so I am reading something in The Athletic and it says that Jones had to pass through waivers. So I don't know. I looked this stuff up when we were number one there all offseason and I thought it said 4 years in the league got you vested, as they call it.  Vested gets you out of waivers as I understood it. I probably got something wrong, but when I think about the slack quality of journalism these days I wonder about that. So I went and looked, again. Well, well.  For everyone: "When a player has accrued at least four seasons in the NFL, they are considered a vested veteran. When these vested veterans get cut, they are released and their contract is terminated. When a vested veteran is released, they are an unrestricted free agent that can sign with any NFL team, and the team that released them doesn’t need to provide any additional compensation." It runs it all down here, where the quotes came from: https://www.profootballnetwork.com/waived-vs-released-nfl/ As far as Jones, the team turned down his 5th year option so I knew that meant he had 4 years in, because they re-signed him anyway, after turning down the much cheaper extra year.  The Athletic is owned by the New York Times so I shouldn't be surprised. That paper was an institution once upon a time but they let their standards go.
    • Well, we got our answer on Army today.
    • Not a chance the SEC could compete with the NFL.  In the large cities that are not in the Southeast, (LA, NYC, Chicago, SF) College football is an afterthought.
