I like Joseph Campbell, but a big fault of his that keeps on popping up is the reliance on Freud's research (understandable since they were contemporaries, but most of it has since been dismissed). Even without that, the archetypes he researched and detailed was interesting and enlightening.

Glad to find another reader of his work -- I, too, think it's fascinating stuff. Much of Freud's writings are now taken with a grain of salt, but like you said they were contemporaries. It's been a while since I've read any of Campbell's stuff, but I think he refers more to Jung than Freud (especially in regard to the archetypes).
