So you disagree with what the experts say. This is what is taught in Princeton, Oxford and most colleges that teach Textual Criticism. This is what one of my best friends was taught at Belmont Abbey. Its likely if you have an educated pastor that he was taught this too and choose to have faith that it wasn't true.

so the sole force of your argument relies on secondhand information about what some professor said somewhere?

how many teachers have you actually talked to about this? with what authority do you claim that "most colleges" teach that in textual criticism?

it seems to me we'd be better off debating the actual issue rather than using someone else's heresay as ammunition.

No, I've read several books by Bible scholars that said those same things. I recommend the ones by Bart Ehrman. Very informative. Also Shelby Sponge is a pastor and he talks about it in some of his books. He is one of the few preachers I can handle. Of course most people don't consider him a Christain (neither do i)

My friend was just an example of someone who learned this at a Religious university.

ps. I actually emailed back and forth with Bart Ehmran. he teaches at UNC. He was quite nice and answered a few of my questions that i had after reading his books.

there is a massive, massive amount of historical evidence that jesus existed, arguably moreso than any other figure in his time period... this really isn't even an issue

Besides the Bible. Um no there is not a massive amount. Please list them.

Who knows. Don't really care. It's more of a philosophy than a religion and it doesn't hinge on his actual existence.

You're sort of proving my point here, to a degree.

Yes, Buddhism is very philosophical but it also has all the makings of a religion (worship, ritual, necessity of faith). There are many Christians who follow the teachings of the Bible but do not take it literally. Do you think Aesop's fables really happened? Of course not. Do children learn from these tales? Absolutely.

Has anyone in here read Joseph Campbell's works?

Buddhism and Christianity (at least the kind in America) are NOTHING a like.
