BOLD Prediction: Defense will be Better not Worse

if the offense is improved at all, that will also help out the D.

i see us picking up a couple more vets in the next few days and in the draft we could probably pick up a couple more solid contributors.

i think the quality guys we've gotten so far can be used as a good indication of what we might be able to expect in the draft. o think fitt was more looking at trying to find diamonds in the rough or guys who could be great if given another chance or whatever. i don't know. whatever it was that he was looking for, i think Morgan is looking at something else. probably benefitting more from being a player himself rather than fitt who was a desk jockey relying on input from other desk jockeys.

Right, the maulers at OG will help the running game which helps the defense stayed rested.  If we can get a couple average pass rushers and a safety when have upgraded the defense IMO.  It's more complete.  Offense is already upgraded before the draft.  OL, and WR are better and we lost Hurst which doesn't really do much...

The run defense is already better with Robinson and Jewell. Pass defense is the concern now.

it will get there.

we get an edge rusher that gives a poo and we'll automatically be better.

the problem there is that 2 of the three options are clowney and chase young. lazy don't care GIF

Yeah, put the 2 together and you might get the production of an average edge. But that was all we had anyway so it's a start.

I think if our defense is somehow better this year, it will only be because of 1 of 2 reasons:

1) our offense improves significantly, which means way lose turnovers and a much higher TOP. We were god awful in both stats last year

2) we go defense heavy in the draft and the rookies ball out + Horn stays healthy and plays the entire year

Otherwise, I don't see the defense performing better this year than last year, which is ok. If the offense doesn't improve significantly, then we should be very worried

Zero pass rush.  Until I see hiw they are addressing the pass rush, I just don't see it. Am a defensive guy.

So many dismiss Burns impact on the defense.

Here’s a fun exercise. Apologies in advance for the formatting, for some reason the copy/paste came in with this black background.

One of these guys is Brian Burns and cost $30m/yr. The other 3 are free agents that will cost significantly less. Where would you rather spend the money?

STATS

25 Tackles; 7.5 Sacks; 0 FF; 15.5% Pass Rush Win Rate; 64.6 Run-defense Grade

STATS

50 Tackles; 8 Sacks; 1 FF; 11.6% PRWR; 56.3 Run-D

STATS

62 Tackles; 8 Sacks; 0 FF; 8.2% PRWR; 65.7 Run-D

STATS

43 Tackles; 9.5 Sacks; 2 FF; 14.2% PRWR; 74.4 Run-D

And as an added bonus, here’s a free agent who has already signed with a different team for less than Brian Burns, and if this doesn’t tell you the Giants got hosed I don’t know what does:

STATS

83 Tackles; 16.5 Sacks; 4 FF; 15.8% PRWR; 61.5 Run-D

We lost both Burns and Gross-Matos.

That wasn't a bad thing, IMO. One fizzled out as it came time to talk about money (I think he had itchy feet to get to somewhere else for the paychecks) and the other guy just never developed into anything but a back-up, not even a real role-player.

Luvu hurts, but like you said, he wasn't much help in coverage. It will be good to get Shaq back and he brings leadership and legacy there. He will make a difference.

Losing Jackson, well, yeah. I think we're all on that page. And Bell was, umm, un-notable back there?

Yeah I forgot about YGM. Bell played 3/4 of the season and was solid if unspectacular at best. Low impact was my wording I believe. He graded as a bottom half of the league safety.

I’d love to get Clowney, tbh. Yeah he’s a mercenary, but he can play either standing up or with his hand in the dirt, and is the definition of playing the run on the way to the QB. Always been a great run defender. Get him and a younger pass rush specialist like Wonnum for cheap, add Haynes coming back from injury, DJ Johnson for depth, maybe draft a guy, and I think that is a lot better than our Burns/YGM combo last year.

It hinges on if they can bring in a veteran like Clowney and if Horn can stay healthy. If so, then it could be a decent defense. If not, then we're going to exposed in the secondary and pass-rush. Having a great run defense won't matter if we can't defend the pass.

I'm interested to see if the Panthers can find a corner in the draft that can replace Jackson.

Burns dismissed his impact before any of us did..

all the talk of how good the players we let go do, and while I think Luvu & Chinn are gonna ball out in WAs, I’d put a paycheck on letting #0 walk was the correct move…

It's fine.  We have moved on.  That doesn't change his impact no matter the personal opinions of fans.

    • What I really learned here is that the Carolina Panthers aren't anywhere near as bad as I initially thought they were earlier this year.  We've got a young and growing offense with some promising parts. But it still needs some tweaks and improvements.  We really still could still use a dominant #1 WR. But Chubba,  Legette, Coker,  and J.Sanders have generally looked decent. Bryce took a big leap after the benching. We can score enough points to keep pace with 2x defending super bowl champions, so offense isn't a huge issue. Main thing that needs improvement is defense. We sorely need a CB 2, and a number of new players at Dline and LB.  We're not quite as bad at edge with Wonnum showing promise.  But we definitely need 1 or 2 more edges Clowney is old.  Run D is probably worse prevailing theme these past couple years. We really need a good young stud or two to pair with Derrick Brown and another LB to pair up with Trevin Wallace. If Morgan and Canales can focus on rebuilding the defense this off-season and possibly going out and getting a #1 WR. This team could easily be somewhere around 7-10 to 10-7 and flirting with playoffs in 1 or 2 seasons. Overall this game has made me feel alot more positive about the direction of the team.
    • With our picks we need pass rush, lb, Safety, a speedster yac wr, o line depth and I still want a mid round qb. We got 9 picks and 8 in the first 5 rounds. If they pull Off another solid draft we be cooking.
    • We had one passing touchdown against the Giants and one passing touchdown against the Chiefs today. Yes a good backup can replicate that. And that is why Andy Dalton in significantly less games has the same number of 30 point outings as Bryce Young. I am on board with you guys about wanting to be hopeful for the future. Today was a good performance to build on especially at home. But let's please keep things in perspective. BTW the Bucs who honestly aren't even that good blew the doors off the Giants today after we went to overtime against them with 17 points. Again. Perspective.
