Panthers go bargain bin shopping

Despite re-signing Tyler Brayton last week, the Panthers still seem to be in the market for additional help, based on conversations around the league

Chicago's Adewale Ogunleye is looking for work after being displaced by Julius Peppers. At 32, he still had 6.5 for the Bears last year. New England's Derrick Burgess or St. Louis' Leonard Little could provide the Panthers with quality depth, if not they're not the kind of every down presence they once were.

If they were after more of a Brayton-style end, to play the run or rush from inside, they could go for players such as Vonnie Holliday or Marques Douglas, veterans who would lend some credence to a still-young room. Also available are former Indianapolis utility man Raheem Brock (who can play inside as well), New Orleans' Charles Grant (who like Little has already stated a desire to play here), and former Saints and Eagles pass-rusher Darren Howard.

i could see us going after one or two of the DEs out there and not taking one in the draft. suits me just fine. we aren't exactly thin there...we just need some more vet help. someone solid like brayton or a pass rush guy. (preferably not charles grant...too many issues)

I'd like for us to still address DT. there are slim pickings in FA but it won't stay that way. more than likely we will be picking one up in the draft.

first two picks could very well be DT and WR (not necessarily in that order).

little would be a good situational pass rusher, and may be able to help brown learn some pass rush moves. his off the field past is not good though, and likely will make it hard for teams to give him a job. at one time he was an elite pass rusher with the rams. i expect he would come very cheap. ogunleye is likely the best depth peice of the bunch and imo could compete for a starting gig with brown and cj.

personally i would target little 1st as he may be the cheapest (injuries, age, off the field past) as he could be useful in passing downs. between little, brown, and taylor we would have 3 speed rushers with brayton and cj at times kicking inside for passing downs. ogunleye would be second but i can see him taking more time from brown and cj at either end possition and i personally want to see both cj and brown develope this year. he would be the best win now guy though of the ones listed. 3rd would be daniels to backup brayton, something we really could use.

vonnie holliday lol

for all the babbies who are too young to remember, the Panthers promised Holliday they were going to draft him in 1998, then decided to go with heroin addict Jason Peters.

jason peter....not jason peters.

Jason and his brother were both losers. The only thing Jason should really be remembered for at all is being the first guy that Tim Krumrie put through his "handfighting" drill that later became a regular part of the combine.

Dom Anile - then head of personnel, if I remember right - promised Holliday he'd draft him, then welched. He gave some lame excuse afterward, trying to make a joke that fell completely flat. Of course, Holliday wound up looking pretty good while Peter was a complete bust.

That was one of the drafts when ESPN cut away during the Panthers choice. When they came back and I saw Jason Peter's name as the Panthers choice, my jaw dropped.

Even if Peters was not a smack addict he would not have been as good as Holliday.
