New Computer

Took me less than 45 minutes to build my new pc and just under an hour to build my daughters, case I bought for hers was too damn small for a 4870 video card but I made it fit.

If you build your own you will know what's in it and that the parts are new and what you want. Getting one from Dell or any other company you may get refurb parts and it could be a nightmare.

Check out newegg.com, they have some already built and some barebone models and they list out each part and spec so you know what you will be getting.

Newegg, Tigerdirect...yeah. There's also the amount of research you have to do in order to insure compatability, OS installation time, shipping expenses, OS cost, and the wait for the products to arrive. By the time you calculate all of that, you could just drop in and grab one of these:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/HP+-+Pavilion+Desktop+with+AMD+Phenom%26%23153%3B+II+X4+Quad-Core+Processor/9549438.p?id=1218122580358&skuId=9549438

You couldn't build that PC for that cheap.

Granted, its not a top of the line model, and AMD's double as space heaters, but with the right video card, it'll run top end games as smooth as silk for the next 3 years...just in time to upgrade the power supply, video card, mobo/proc and ram.

I'm all for upgrading. But I'd never suggest to anyone, regardless of how much they knew about PCs, to build their own.

And then you have misc errors, such as them shipping the wrong component, or the builder ordering the wrong component.

I'm a bigger fan of using barebones sets, but even then, at the end of the day you've put more into it than you should.

Proc - $100

Mobo - $100

Dvdrom - 50$

Ram - 200$ (cheapest)

Case - 50$

Power Supply - 75$

HD - 75$

Right now we are already over the price of that factory built, non-refurbished machine. That's not even counting the labor put into the research, ordering, construction.

And I conveniently left out the cost of the OS. Maybe the builder goes Linux.

Too bad that machine is an HP, they're garbage. I prefer Gateway, Emachine or Acer, and you can catch similar deals on all of them, and they are so much easier to upgrade.

Looking at the specs of that machine you have no idea what brand anything is or timings on the memory and you can get memory, 4 gigs for under $90. I got 8 gigs for $150 DDR2 1066 OCZ Reaper. It takes some time and a little bit or work but at the end of the day I would go with building one, just my opinion. Check out ebay as well, I would get something someone built over a gateway or e-machine.

Is gateway still making pc's?

So take the money you saved by not having to buy Windows 7 and spend it on ram, IF the ram in there isn't up to par. But upgrading the ram 200mhz would make very little difference either way. Your focus on the ram is suspect.

More than likely, the power supply is the weakest link in that pc, and would need to be upgraded before you could think about putting in a real video card.

A little snooping would come up with a better deal than the one I linked. Took me 5 minutes to find that one, and if I were to invest as much time looking for a deal as you did looking for parts, ordering each part, waiting for each part to arrive, assembling and installing the OS, I could find one hell of a deal.

You'd probably be hard pressed to find a machine with a stand alone video card that's "crummy". Most MBs on the mid to low end will have on board video and no one will put a low end card on a high end MB.

Seriously dude, you need to just buy a built system from dell or something.

Budget and gaming rig shouldn't ever really be in the same sentence.

That and if your looking to buy a gaming machine and dont know what you want down to the manufacturer of the power supply and CPU fan you're getting in over your head.

I hate to sound like an arrogant douche on this but seriously... Just buy a middle of the road Dell and you'll be good to go for the next year or so.

Like I said, Im not planning on getting this as a gaming machine. I was just wondering if there were some good deals out there. thanx tho.
