Or maybe good news if they want Burns instead of those two dudes for whatever reason

This is interesting and not unrealistic. They are known for big moves.

Yeah, we'll find out in time. A lot of the guys here that are now saying trade Burns, wanted to re-sign him at the beginning of the season. I was on the trade Burns bandwagon the moment those first Rams' trade rumors started because I never felt he was a game changing talent. Two firsts was a vast overpay. And then it ended up being the two firsts plus a second! Fitt was a terrible GM, but back to Burns.

Even mediocre players generally find the juice to play well in a contract year. Burns did the opposite, played it "safe", and is still demanding top end money. That's a huge red flag for me.

Burns can't play the run, doesn't rack up a lot of QB pressures or hits, and can't drop back in coverage. For all the poo, Sweat gets on here, he has outplayed Burns the last couple of years when it comes to those advanced stats. Heck, he had more sacks last season too. Burns is a slightly above average third down pass rush specialist asked to play all three downs. That's not the sort of guy you break the bank for nor trade multiple picks for.

You're talking as though Burns is basically average, and it's just not true. He's not "slightly" above average, even in a down year. He's markedly above average, point blank.

Furthermore, Montez Sweat  has been good, I'll give you that, but it's funny that during their careers, Burns has more sacks (and I'd love to compare their hits and pressures, but am too cheap to pay for it). One thing that I think that most people would agree upon is that Sweat has been in a much better situation. He was never the top guy, and has way more opportunities to get pressures because the Commanders have been a more competitive team since 2019 than we have.

I agree.  Media is changing their stories about what the Panthers are doing daily.  Im not sold on Morgan yet but this new tight lipped office i could only see as a positive even though some fans may not like it.

I sure the hell hope so.  Other teams are signing their players they want to keep, and we haven't heard a peep out of our front office.  It is starting to feel like all our free agents are looking to get the hell out of Carolina.

Looks like 2024 is going to be a rough year.

Depends you want to talk about him.

as an overall player at the position? He probably is just above average.

if you want to talk about him only as a speed outside pass rusher?  Sure.  He is top tier at that one thing.

Burns is below average against the run and doesn’t have much diversity in attacking the passer.

Well, you see his overall rank regarding win rate in 2023 . His overall PFF grade last season wasn't bad either. This, all basically playing essentially as a solo pass rusher on the worst team in the NFL. Sure, you can spin it negatively, but there's still unlocked potential in an already  productive young EDGE. We'll see where it goes.

There is also that in Josh Sweat, Who only has 11 less sacks than Burns and is only a year older.

The big thing is Josh sweat isnt looking for 30m+ a season.

We are not getting what you guys are thinking for Burns unless we sing him to a contract and pay a good portion of his salary before trading him .

No one is giving up a 1st+ for the right to pay him 30m+ a season.

I don't expect him to get 30 mil a season, and I've said aplenty that I don't think that his play has warranted that, but I do believe that his play and upside is better than a second, and certainly more worth than a third (which is ludicrous) and a much better than average payday. Add in the fact that he's young, is durable, has a high motor, and can easily bookend across from someone that is near-equal or better, then someone might be willing to pay more than what some of you are thinking. Moreover, we're a broke-boy team at the moment largely due to the tag, and we're not going anywhere fast. Other teams have more cap (or can make more), so might be more willing to spend more for Burns' services. And, believe it or not, there may be two or three teams that are a Brian Burns away from getting over the hump.

    • At this rate, maybe he'll be a decent 8-9 QB on his 3rd HC by year 6. Standards are so low around here now. Tepper has done some serious damage to the fan base.
