Yasinskas thinks one "starter" needed at DT

i dont know how ppl think that we need a DT more then a WR, yes we have problems at DT and DE but we have no speed at WR besides smitty and hes only getting older i would rather have the front 4 we have right now then not get a good number 2 WR in the draft

Where have you been all this thread? Thank god someone gets it. We need to add two receivers in this draft. I even had one mock where we picked them back to back. That is how desperate i am to improve our passing game. :cheers2:

little depth?

1-Steve Smith

2-Dwayne Jarrett

3-Kenneth Moore

4-Dexter Jackson

5-Wallace Wright

6-Charly Martin

again...little depth? we have 1 legit starter in Smitty, and a guy who could eventually turn into a #2 in Jarrett. Kenneth Moore showed last year he is a good #3, D-Jack, can be a good #4, and KR/PR guy. Wright, I have no idea about other than he is a ST beast. and Charly Martin only played in a few games last season. we have depth, just not a legit #2. say we draft Arrelious Benn who battle Jarrett in TC for the #2 WR position. all of a sudden, we "COULD" have a really good passing game.

Jarrett might be a number 2 WR one day but not next year sorry

Jarret got his first TD playing with backups hes been playing for us for what 2-3 years? and hasn't shown much really i know alot of that has to do with jake not spreading the ball around but if fox wants to keep his job next year hes going to pick a WR with our 1st pick

While I think our #1 need is WR, I wouldn't be mad with drafted a DT with our 1st pick. This is a pretty deep draft class at WR, and whoever comes in will be behind Smitty and DJ in a run first offense. I do see two WRs drafted this year, and one will be KR/PR.

If the right guy isn't there though, I'm not terribly worried about the guys we have now. It's probably more likely we bring in a FA to help out at DT.

Whoever we draft with our first pick, I'm sure he'll turn out well. Hurney/fox are pretty spot-on with their first shot.

We can't just look at DT's, we also have to look at fit. Right now, we have Tyler and Irvin at UT and Leonard at NT (I'm not sure exactly where Johnson fits, but he's the most expendable of the bunch and likely won't be a deterrent to bringing in a high DT pick). So, lets say we get an UT such as Alualu with our 2nd round pick, what we are doing is effectively giving up on Irvin as a potential starter since he is also best suited to UT. Now if he were a late round pick like Hayden, then that probably wouldn't be a big deal. However, he was a 3rd round choice that the team feels has a lot of potential, and most likely are not ready to give up on this early.

So, assuming Irvin is projected to eventually start, along with Tyler being a solid rotational option, probably means the team will not take a UT with our first pick...especially since they like moving Brayton and/or Johnson in on passing downs.

Leonard, on the other hand, showed in his limited time here that he can be effective in the NT rotation. However, while he cost us a late pick, that's a position that could be upgraded if a guy who clearly has starting potential at NT is there. The problem, is that I'm not sure anyone fits that mold. The best options are Cody and Thomas, but both have big red flags. Cody is likely going to struggle with his weight his entire career, and Thomas all but disappeared last year after blowing up the season before. So, I'm not sure the team would be comfortable sacrificing a chance at a legitimate #2 option for either since that is where our biggest question lies.

With that said, if a guy falls that the team has graded solidly in the first round (like they did with Brown last draft), I wouldn't be shocked if they make a move to get him...whether by trade to move up or just sticking with our pick. It all comes down to value, and how much the team feels he will contribute this season.

I think Leonard is an OK backup NT, but he's never been a starter, and he's coming of IR, so I'm sort of crossing my fingers.

The "Tank" (Tyler) is a good run stuffer, but not a big NT (only 306), or a penetrating DT. If He's paired with Leonard, they will probably be OK against the run, but they won't give much of a pass rush up the middle.

The backup DT's for the Panthers are of mostly unknown quality.

I feel the Panthers greatest D-line needs are now (after re-signing Brayton):

1 - A fast penetrating DT, with pass rush ability (3rd round)

2 - A big space eating, run stopping NT (2nd or 7th round)

3 - An all purpose (run stopping/pass rushing) DE (4th round)

The NT talent in the 2nd round isn't as good as the DT talent, but after the 2nd round you can't find a NT till near the end of the draft.

:nono:KattsAZZ when do you suggest we get a WR? I can not believe the lack of confidence you guys have in the DLINE. If we draft like you suggest we will have basically used ever pick on the DLINE.

1. E.Brown

2. DT

3. DT

4. DE

5. Tank Tyler

6. Louis Leonard we have Oakland's 6th though so following your logic we could draft another DT or DE with the 6th and 7th

:nono:

You sir are an idjit.

i still think it's too early to tell what the panthers really are going to do this year in the draft. i can tell you some facts though:

mart hurney and fox have managed to move up in the draft two years in a row now. i won't be surprised if they do this again this year. i think it's paid off to some extent, Otah is a beast, and Brown... well, he's a wait and see. but technically, he shouldn't have done much last year, since he's technically getting drafted with this year's first round pick... which, imo, weighs more heavily than a 2nd round pick.

steve smith wants another play maker WR, either in the slot or at #2, i'm sure he doesn't care (and it's possible for a rookie to make that big of an impact, considering DeSean Jackson and Percy Harvin have excelled so well in their rookie seasons)

hurney feels comfortable with the young players they have on their roster... i don't think they'll even draft a DT at this point in time. they've dropped a lot on the guys they have now, and i wouldn't expect them to just give up on those guys. and i think they'll have a chance to get a good or at least decent run stopper through FA.

meeks looooovvvvvvvvveeeeeeeeessssssssss edge rushers with frames like e. brown. i wouldn't be surprised if they go after another one in this year's draft.

don't forget about compensatory picks!

and last but not least: we have the best running game in the league, end of story. (i know it doesn't relate to the draft, but i just love being able to say that :))
